"Last page" - Possible to jump to last post? by nobody1089 at 3:32 AM EDT on June 10, 2016
Right now, when I click "last page" or click on the RSS feed, the browser opens the very top of the page, not the last post in the thread.

Is it possible to add an anchor to the last post in the thread?

----

Another thing: Is it possible for the RSS feed to change its URL whenever a thread gains replies? That will help Firefox Live Bookmarks track whether or not there's unread posts.

Is it wrong of me to say that people are far too lazy if they can't be bothered to scroll down, or even press the PageDown or End keys on the keyboard?
by nobody1089 at 7:13 PM EDT on June 10, 2016
It involves either moving my hand from the mouse to the keyboard, or scrolling up to several screen lengths down.

Either way, the forum should do it right, and jump to the last post.
by TheUltimateKoopa at 8:10 PM EDT on June 10, 2016
Oh dear. Such hard work, moving your hand a few inches to your keyboard and pressing "End". How the world is doomed.

Hcs64 forums has an RSS feed? Man I need to get with the times.

But yeah scrolling to the bottom of a page really isn't that difficult, it's a matter of skill.
by hcs at 10:21 PM EDT on June 10, 2016
The RSS feed probably isn't very useful, Josh W wrote it and I have no idea how that is supposed to work.

As for last post, I don't really see it as an issue. Are you maybe stuck on the long forum with 100 posts per page (forumlong.php)? If so, the main one is forum.php which has only 10 per page. I could throw in a target but I don't think I want to change the behavior of the "last page" links.
by nobody1089 at 10:58 PM EDT on June 10, 2016
I use the RSS feed to keep track of unread threads. Except right now, I have to guess from the reply count and post number, whether or not I read the thread or not.

And about complaining that this issue is too small to fix - Websites should be as easy to use as possible, not throwing inconveniences and extra steps from the user, to "go to last post" like every other forum software.

Is it possible to add a "last post" feature, in parallel with "last page"?
by TheUltimateKoopa at 11:39 PM EDT on June 11, 2016
Again, why do you find it so much hard work, just to press a button? I mean you can literally just press "End", and it'll instantly take you to the bottom of the entire page, which will almost certainly contain the last post within that screen.
by nobody1089 at 12:11 AM EDT on June 12, 2016
Because websites should be designed to be as easy to navigate as possible.

Do I need to write a userscript for this trivial feature?

Sure they are. But it doesn't mean they should literally hold your hand. You're just fucking lazy.
by hcs at 8:24 PM EDT on June 12, 2016
Lay off TUK. I don't agree with the request, but I don't think you're adding anything to the conversation.

EDIT: "Jump to last post" isn't hand-holding, it's standard behavior in every other forum I've ever used.

Here's the userscript: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/20514-hcs64-last-post
Shorthand URL syntax? Optionally, autodetect URL?

Do you plan to fix the RSS feed, or not?

Don't plan on it, no, don't know exactly what would be the right thing to do with RSS.
by hcs at 2:27 AM EDT on June 16, 2016
So, I've got an experimental update to the forum here with some new features. Notably the RSS feed links now go directly to the newest post. There is also a link to the newest post on the main page, the link is the timestamp in the "updated" column. Let me know what you think of that.

Also has some fixes like forcing HTTPS.

Thought you weren't going to change things but I like it! Pretty cool that user profiles are on the right side now lol for some reason that makes more sense.
by nobody1089 at 1:04 PM EDT on June 16, 2016
nice!
by hcs at 4:26 PM EDT on June 16, 2016
So that meets with your approval?

EDIT: You made the RSS feed indicate new posts? That's amazing!

I have to say, I'm really liking the new setup. It's much easier to see what I've missed with the "updated" link. Thanks for the suggestion, nobody1089.
by nobody1089 at 12:35 AM EDT on July 30, 2016
thanks for adding it... I think?
by snakemeat at 9:52 AM EDT on July 30, 2016
Really like the updates. Thanks a lot for the ideas and implementation.
by nobody1089 at 1:14 AM EDT on August 13, 2016
(minor curiosity) Why does the forum say "N posts" but the RSS feed say "N-1 replies"?
by hcs at 1:55 AM EDT on August 13, 2016
Ask Josh W, he wrote the RSS thing.
