Star Fox 64 translation effort by unknownfile at 4:39 PM EDT on October 11, 2006
Due to the fact that this is a large project for me, and that I don't want to hog up the "How I Spend My Time" thread, I have decided to give this a thread of its own.
I started working on this project after playing the Japanese version for months and then heard the English voices. Unlike the Japanese version, which used several established voice actors (some which have also had roles in popular anime such as One Piece and Naruto), the English version was performed by complete amateurs who sounded like crap. In addition to this, they changed the dialogue in parts of the game.
Someone's feeling bitter... by Yoshinkeru at 9:14 PM EDT on October 11, 2006
Is someone a little cranky, UF? /:)
"...the English version was performed by complete amateurs who sounded like ******."
Come on, I thought they weren't that bad. And don't say I don't know what I'm talking about, either: believe me, I've heard MUCH worse. (WHERE did they find the voice-actor for Tails, especially in Sonic Adventure 2?)
"A text table would be too much work considering all of the characters the game uses. It's almost as if the graphics programmer just said, 'Eh, let's just stick all of these in.'
And I have yet to fulfil hcs's request of changing 'Fox' to '******face'."
What the HEY does that last comment mean??
(looks around) It...just seems you're in a bad mood, I know not why. I'll...just be heading off now. (dashes off)
If that's UF's bad mood, what's his good mood? Being in the IRC channel, I can tell you that he's like that most of the time. As for HCS's "request," while it did surprise me a little, it certainly does sound like something HCS might ask (though, I'd suspect as a joke). Just letting you know that UF is like this, more often than not. It doesn't seem like a bad mood to me, but I guess if taken the wrong way, it could be percieved as such. You have now made me wonder though... What's a good mood for UF? Mouser X out.
hcs's request was nothing more than a joke, though I would still like to try to do that. It would be the first thing I would do to hack the Japanese characters into English. So far I haven't been able to do that.
Also:
"Come on, I thought they weren't that bad. And don't say I don't know what I'm talking about, either: believe me, I've heard MUCH worse. (WHERE did they find the voice-actor for Tails, especially in Sonic Adventure 2?)"
Listen to this clip. Now listen to this one. Any significant differences? Yep, there are. (Leon's voice is probably the best cast out of all of them.)
Last but not least, what's a good mood for me? Well, you'd know if you knew me personally. However, I'm mostly stressed out from all the b.s called schoolwork. :b
BACK ON TOPIC:
Did a bit more hacking last night. I have started to figure out how the text function works, and so far, I have figured out two different registers:
a1 = text pointer a2 = position on screen where output should start
Uh, sorry to bug ya again, but... by Yoshinkeru at 3:56 PM EDT on October 12, 2006
I can't quite seem to get the US wav. I'm not sure if this is something on my end, or what.
From the filename, though, I'm guessing this is when you confront the Star Wolf team for the final time at Venom, and having memorized most of the dialogue on some of the planets (yes, I tend to do that with some games), I can guess the comparison.
And now, I think I'm beginning to see your point; the Japanese would be better at the voice-acting, since they did create the game. :) (I was surprised to hear that they were prominent voice-actors; in fact, that's what I aim to be over here, someday!)
But still, I say give the US voice-actors the benefit of a doubt. They still sound fine to me. Of course, this is one man's opinion, and again, I've heard worse (again, according to me). (This also reminds me how awful] I thought they sounded in SSBM. Ecch! THAT was bad.)
Above all: Don't let me stop you from the project! (Sorry to get this slightly off-topic to begin with!) I've actually been interested in whatthe Japanese voices are (as opposed to the English version) in video games, myself. In fact, I remember how different they sounded in Sonic Adventure, when I tried that out. So keep up that good work!
This will dump a file called log.txt (mine outputs log.txt one directory up from the Release_External dir). Also, you will need to run this under the interpreter, meaning that the game will run a bit slower. However, it is MUCH EASIER when the game is slowed down, so get playing!
A work-in-progress translation by unknownfile at 4:05 PM EDT on October 13, 2006
CORNERIA TRANSLATION OMG
Pepper: We've been waiting for you, Fox. If there's any hope for this planet, it lies with you! We're counting on you.
Fox: (The first line can't be translated) I won't let Andorf do as he likes!
SAKUSEN No. 1: Starfox Sugeki!!
(Note that lines are missing - this is because I suck at Japanese)
Peppy: Hey Slippy, don't be a fool!
Peppy: Slippy, watch out! There's an enemy behind you!
Slippy: Aaah, crap!!
Slippy: Thank you, Fox. I thought I was done for!
Fox: We're entering the city of Corneria now!
Falco: Those horrible people...
Peppy: There's an enemy behind you!
Peppy: Brake! (C-Down)
(Yes, I am aware that Peppy's line above is an incredibly literal translation. The actual sentence "Brake ni yarishimase" would translate to "Do the brake!")
<CHECKPOINT>
Falco: Fox, I'm going ahead of you! Take care of the guys behind me!
Falco: Shit! Something's wrong! I can't control it!!
IF YOU SAVE FALCO:
Falco: You've saved me, Fox. I am forever in your debt!
(The above line is pretty roughly translated, so yeah.)
Peppy: Try rolling! (Z or R twice)
(The translation for the rest of the area is complete as of now)

I haven't done work on this in a bit, so tonight I will start hacking the ending (which, oddly enough, is the first thing that I will patch).
by unknownfile at 11:46 AM EDT on October 18, 2006
Did some fiddling with the graphics pointer last night, I got some pretty interesting results. However, *none* of them were related to text. :(
Also, I have yet to hack the game using Tile Molestor, so that should be a project for tonight. I should rip the US text graphics and do the translation from there. The MIO0 compression could get in my way, though...
Results of the graphics hackage from earlier: Now with PICS!!
Call it glitchy, but you have to admit, it does look much cooler.
My Japanese to English dictionary sucks pigdick by unknownfile at 8:39 PM EST on October 29, 2006
(20:00:02) UNKNOWNFILE: well enough of gimmick (20:00:15) UNKNOWNFILE: time to give people what they want: a translation of STAR FOX 64 (20:00:38) UNKNOWNFILE: S T A R F O X (20:00:40) UNKNOWNFILE: I N (20:00:44) UNKNOWNFILE: *nintendo 64 logo here* (20:01:29) UNKNOWNFILE: Naus: Fox, you have a message from Corneria's Pepper-shogun (20:01:54) UNKNOWNFILE: (Shogun is a Japanese military term, which I usually translate as Comrade) (20:04:04) UNKNOWNFILE: Pepper: Help us, Star Fox! Andorf's delared war! He's causing chaos all over Corneria, and is devestating the entire Lylat system! (20:04:35) UNKNOWNFILE: Our forces can't handle him! Help us, Star Fox! (20:04:45) UNKNOWNFILE: and that's pretty much all the dialogue from the opening (20:05:11) UNKNOWNFILE: do note that most of that is pretty much loosely translated (20:05:44) UNKNOWNFILE: I'm going to resume from my last playthrough, which coincidentally leaves off at Area 6 (20:06:52) UNKNOWNFILE: Pepper says something along the lines of "you guys are really brave, please come back to us alive" (20:07:14) UNKNOWNFILE: to which Fox responds: "Makasete kudasai!" or, "Leave it to me!' (20:07:21) UNKNOWNFILE: GOOD LUCK (20:07:59) UNKNOWNFILE: since everyone skips over the opening sequences, I'll just start off from Fox's first line (20:08:24) UNKNOWNFILE: Fox: We've entered Venom's airspace! (20:08:39) UNKNOWNFILE: Peppy: Don't let your guard down! (loose translations ahoi) (20:09:02) UNKNOWNFILE: Slippy: There's a mine field ahead! (more loose translation) (20:10:26) UNKNOWNFILE: Falco uses somewhat annoying slang, but the line he says pretty much means "They're behind me!" (20:11:11) UNKNOWNFILE: then he says his generic "I'll give you what you deserve!" line while chasing enemies (obviously) (20:12:19) UNKNOWNFILE: good god, my dictionary sucks. (20:12:42) UNKNOWNFILE: anyways, falco says another line while continuing to chase the enemies (20:13:17) UNKNOWNFILE: Responding to Naus's call gets you: "Sending assistance from Great Fox" (20:13:31) UNKNOWNFILE: proceeded by some lasers from said ship pwning fleets ahead of you (20:14:10) UNKNOWNFILE: Slippy: Huge missiles coming this way! (20:16:08) UNKNOWNFILE: Peppy: Shoot them down! (followed by more stuff, which I can't be certain of, but it sounded like "They're cursed!" (20:17:58) UNKNOWNFILE: Commander: Did we get them?! (20:18:08) UNKNOWNFILE: Caiman: No, not yet! (20:21:09) UNKNOWNFILE: freakin' kanji, I can't really translate Peppy's "They're behind me!" line (20:21:38) UNKNOWNFILE: however, he follows that with "What the hell are you doing, Fox?! Hurry!" (20:21:49) UNKNOWNFILE: Ah, a call from Andorf! (20:21:51) UNKNOWNFILE: *answers* (20:22:03) UNKNOWNFILE: Andorf: Are you the son of that James McCloud? (20:22:23) UNKNOWNFILE: or, "So you're the son of James McCloud" (20:22:27) UNKNOWNFILE: whichever you prefer (20:25:52) UNKNOWNFILE: Next line I can't really translate, other than the fact that he's calling something childish (20:26:44) UNKNOWNFILE: Him: Hahahaha! You don't stand a chance in front of me! (Loose translation) (20:27:46) UNKNOWNFILE: well, I'll skip his next line (20:27:51) UNKNOWNFILE: guess I'll revise it later (20:28:04) UNKNOWNFILE: Caiman: The first line of defense has been breached! (20:29:15) UNKNOWNFILE: Fox then says a line which I will lazily copy from the American version, since I can't really translate it: "We're gonna break through that fleet!" (20:29:37) UNKNOWNFILE: followed by Caiman repeating his previous line, except he says the second line has been breached (20:32:05) UNKNOWNFILE: Commander: Shoot them! Shoot them! Shoot them down! Don't let the enemies through! (20:34:27) UNKNOWNFILE: I LOVE THIS DICTIONARY (20:34:35) UNKNOWNFILE: IT IS SO INCOMPLETE (20:35:45) UNKNOWNFILE: AS A RESULT, I CAN'T REALLY TRANSLATE SLIPPY'S NEXT LINE (20:36:21) UNKNOWNFILE: Best guess I can give it is: "We're in sight of Venom -- Shit! I was careless!" (20:36:34) UNKNOWNFILE: interesting to note is that he doesn't notice the enemy behind him in the US version (20:37:15) UNKNOWNFILE: Caiman: The final line's been breached! (20:37:28) UNKNOWNFILE: Commander: Are these guys monsters?! (20:37:52) UNKNOWNFILE: Commander: Shit! Send it out! Hurry! (20:38:00) UNKNOWNFILE: And now we have a boss fight :) (20:38:27) UNKNOWNFILE: that's your translation for now (20:38:41) UNKNOWNFILE: now let me finish this boss in peace, translation mongers
