Dr. Mario 64 error by parrothead at 1:33 AM EDT on October 21, 2006
I encountered an error playing Dr. Mario 64's USF file. It won't play, but the other USF files work fine. Can someone support me on this one, please?
by Mouser X at 2:17 AM EDT on October 21, 2006
Frist off, did you already read the FAQ? If yes, and that didn't help, then hopefully we can figure out something else. Does Mario Kart work for you? What settings do you have 64th Note set to?

I'd help more, but I'm so blasted tired right now that my head refuses to put anymore into this post than questions for now. If I get the chance, I may improve on this post in the morning. Hopefully someone can help more than I have. Also, if you answer the questions I asked, it might aid others in figuring this out. Mouser X over and out.

Lemme guess... Do you have your usflib in the same folder as your miniusfs?

MiniUSFs? You mean the music tracks? Yes, but when I downloaded the file for Cruis'n USA, it did the same thing the DM64 one did, but it played it.

Well, if you went through the FAQ, like I asked, then you'd know what the USFLIB file is. In other words, you didn't exactly answer the question. It's very important that the USFLIB, and the MINIUSF lib files are in the same directory. If they're not, then you won't get any music. MINIUSF files are, putting it simply, pointers into the USFLIB, where the actual music is stored. In other words, MINIUSF files are basically empty. The actual music data is stored in the USFLIB.

As for additional problems, what settings are you using in 64th Note? You didn't answer this... What version of Winamp are you using? Are you using in_zip? Do *any* of the Dr Mario USFs play?

Overall, I'd have to reitterate that you MAKE SURE that the USFLIB is present in the same directory as the MINIUSFs. If it's not, then it will most certainly not work, no matter how hard you try. If if is there, and it's still not playing, then I'd say that it's some settings in 64th Note. Though, it's also somewhat possible that it's the output plugin that Winamp is using, or a DSP plugin (but I'd find that fairly unlikely).

Anyway, hopefully this has helped. Mouser X over and out.

The USFLIB file is with the MINIUSF files in the same folder, but the MINIUSFs are still not working.

The Winamp version I'm using is Winamp 5.1. I'm not using in_zip. None of the DM64 USFs play at all. I don't know what the output plugin is.

So, Dr. Mario isn't working at all (you've said this, I'm just restating), but other USF sets have worked. Could you please name some USF sets that work for you? In 64th Note's preferances do you have "Seek backwards" enabled? Do you have "Round frequency" enabled? If not, turn those on, and see if it makes a difference.

Please note: I'm attempting to make a very specific way of accessing the preferances. You may already know this, you may not. Others have had to access the preferances before, and I had to walk them step by step through it. I'm doing so again, to hopefully make things easier in the long run. If you know how to access the preferances, feel free to skip this part.

To access the preferances, push CTRL+P on your keyboard, then in the window that appears, you'll see a column on the left. At the bottom, there's a secton called "Plugins." Underneath that is the "Input" entry. Select that. In the field on the right, you'll see a list of plugins. Look for "64th Note 1.1 (DATE)" and select it. Then, at the bottom of the window, there's 3 buttons. One says "Configure." Click that. A new window will appear. In that window, there's a bunch of settings. On the right of that window, you'll see 3 buttons that say, going from top to bottom, "OK," "Cancel," and "Help." Next to those buttons, on the left, are some settings, which include the "Round Frequency" (immediatly underneath the "Use recompiler CPU" which should be turned on) setting, and the "Seek backwards" setting, which is immediatly underneath the "Round Frequency" setting. With me so far? Hopefully so.

In the preferances, make sure the first 3 settings are on (they should have a check mark by them). For now, turn everything else in that column, left of the "Ok" button, off (uncheck them), except for the one at the very bottom. Turn the "Display Errors" on. With that on, we'll hopefully be able to see why 64th Note isn't playing Dr. Mario. Now, select "OK" and close the preferences, until you're back into the main part of Winamp. Now, try playing some USFs from Dr. Mario, and let us know what it does, especially if any errors popup.

Hopefully this was helpful. Again, sorry for the very drawn out directions. Sorry if you already knew all that. Please let us know if this helped. If you still have questions, or can't access 64th Note's preferances, please respond. I'm sure we can still help you on this (there's more than one way to access the preferances). Good luck with this. Mouser X over and out.

In case Mouser's advice doesn't help, what version of Windows are you using?

I have:

Cruis'N USA (Gives me an error, but plays)
ExciteBike 64 (Doesn't give me an error, but it doesn't play)
Wave Race 64 (Plays fine)
Dr. Mario 64 (Gives me two errors and shuts down WinAmp)
Blast Corps (Plays fine)
Goldeneye 007 (Plays fine)
F-ZERO X (Plays fine)

AND

Super Smash Bros. (Plays fine)

Here is what my USF's preferences look like after I followed your instructions:

Are you using v1.1 or v1.2 of 64th Note? I know that Excitebike 64 will not play unless you have one of the most recent versions.

It would greatly help if we knew what the error messages said. I am not exactly sure what the problem is now, but if we knew what the error messages are, I am sure that at least one of us could diagnose your problem.

Well, it looks to me like you're using an older version of 64th Note. The picture shows 64th Note v0.9. Try out v1.1 or v1.2 beta 1. When having a problem, it's a good idea to upgrade first, to see if that fixes it. Also, in regards to 64th Note 1.2 beta, I've been using it with no problems since it came out. If you want to listen to Gauntlet Legends, then you'll need to use 1.2 anyway. If that doesn't interest you in the least, then feel free to use 1.1.

Anyway, I'm running late. Let us know if upgrading makes a difference. Mouser X over and out.
