I ordered a couple of CDs lately, a few of them came today.
Though I only ordered one copy of the new Metroid Metal album (Varia Suite), they sent two (each mailed separately on separate days).
Which is nothing too outstanding, mistakes happen.
I also got the Blip Festival 2008 live album today. Well, half of it. It's a two disc album and the double case only had one CD in it.
It was the conjunction of these two events that made me give up and go crazy.

In Fortran 90:

1/(10**1) = 0
This is understandable because 1 is an INTEGER, which means 1/10 is automatically casted to an INTEGER type before it's assigned to a REAL variable (not shown here.)

Solution:
1./(10**1) = .1
The decimal point after the constant 1 explicitly makes the result of the expression REAL.

However:
1./(10**2) = 9.99999978E-03
Obviously .00999999978 is an approximation of the expected result, .01.

Ah... http://www.math.hawaii.edu/lab/197/fortran/fort3.htm#base
That's annoying.

Great news! If you have a Wii, now is NOT the time to update! Check out how "useful" the new System Menu 4.2 is! Gape in awe as Homebrew is (currently) brought to its knees!

I'm sure they'll find a way to get around all this crap Nintendo pulled, but it's still annoying.

And for those of you who have BootMii installed as Boot2 (and thus have a Trucha Boot1), this new update overwrites that as well. It'll take a new installer, and a little more work, but because you have the Trucha Boot1, I'm sure they'll find a way to reinstall BootMii for you.

As for those of you who have BootMii as an IOS (like me), too bad. I'm sure Team Twiizers will find something, but the new update gets rid of that as well. I'm glad my Wii is offline. I won't be updating soon. Mouser X over and out.

Megatainment mini-review by hcs at 12:29 PM EDT on October 1, 2009
I got the digital version of Megatainment a month or so ago, finally got the hard copy yesterday. This is the Mega Man 1 arrangement collaboration between The Megas and Entertainment System, both of whose work I've enjoyed.
Has 4 tracks, really only the first and last are enjoyable. The middle tracks (Bombman - Beneath the Steel and Fire & Ice - Hell has Frozen Over) are just confusing, though Fire & Ice has a cool sounding chorus. I may be misunderstanding, but it seems like Entertainment System recorded the instruments and The Megas worked on and recorded the lyrics completely separately, and on these tracks they just clash unpleasantly.
Track 1, Elecman - Evolution of Circuitry is the most musically consistent and enjoyable on the EP. Track 4, Dr. Wily - Look What You've Done, comes the closest to The Megas awesome lyrics on Get Equipped, but it has more of that loose coupling creeping in.
I feel hurt that there's no Cutman, oh well.

Gave it 3 stars on vgmdb, seemed fair as I enjoyed half the tracks.

The last few days I've been spending every spare moment on LZH8, a relatively new compression that's started appearing in Wii Virtual Console games.

On Sunday night/Monday morning I disassembled the binary from such wad, documented the format, and produced a decompressor.

On Monday and Tuesday nights and Wednesday morning I wrote a compressor that almost perfectly recompresses files (there is some slight difference the beginning but the bulk of the bitstream is identical). This works for compressing patched ROMs for injection into the VC.

This morning I implemented some hashing for much faster compression. I also made a non-strict version of the compressor, which uses the same output format but goes beyond the arbitrary limits in existing compressed files for slightly better compression (a 2MB ROM compresses 4k smaller), the smaller files also work in the VC.

I'm still frustrated about the ordering of the tables, though my method is fine and the files I produce are exactly the same size and bit-for-bit identical past the first 1k or so, I was really hoping to be able to exactly reproduce the files. Being able to one-up Nintendo's compression is a small consolation.

While HCS is going around and doing totally awesome and useful things, I, on the other hand, just spent 10 hours straight (yes, non-stop, for anything...) playing the NDS game, Nostalgia. Sadly, most of that time was spent level grinding, though, not intentionally. I recently got an upgrade to my airship, which allowed me to travel to any point on the "globe" (North still wraps around to the South) I wanted to, so I spent a significant portion of my time traveling to these new areas, and filling out the map. The most time-consuming problem is that the random battles happen far too often. In that last ten hours, probably 2, maybe 3, hours of it actually progressed the story. :/

But hey, at least it's a fun game, even if the battles get a bit tedious after awhile (especially when you're a much higher level than the game expects you to be at, at the point I'm currently at). Mouser X over and out.

I thought this image, and song, were too awesome not to share them. The original flash can be found at the Gainax website. The image (extracted from the SWF) can be found here, and the song can be found here.

I really liked how the various retro references were used (see the Famicom on his head? Is that a Virtual Boy for the visor?). Apparently, they're not too fond of the current-gen consoles though (there's even a Wii building there), as they appear to be crumbling/burning.

Anyway, please enjoy. Mouser X over and out.

Random dialogue imagined while walking home from shoe store yesterday (based on a term I misremembered from here):

(Taking a class on vampire anatomy)
Teacher: The most important thing is to not waste time trying to stake the nonvital organs. For instance, the Dark Liver of Decay--

Student: That sounds pretty vital!

Teacher: Vital? Hardly. Being an evil organ, the Dark Liver's only function is to scheme against the other organs. Moving on, the Abominable Cavity also contains the Spleen--

Student: Oh, I know this one!

Teacher: Only because I'm intentionally mispronouncing it. The "ee" is really more of a five hour wailing sound, and I am trying to get through this lecture in thirty minutes, so please stop interrupting.

"Apply for partnership to take advantage of your popular video: Dreamcast Boot (Develoment System)"

in other words they're asking for me to put shitty ads on my videos if i serve the corporate google empire

PROS: i'm poor as shit so this will help make money

CONS: youtube is run by google and wants nothing more than to plaster their dicks over a 10-second video that somehow has received 35,000 views over two years
