There needs to be a 'human' coding language. For example, when your program doesnt work, yelling out "WORK, YOU STUPID PIECE OF JUNK" should make the corrections necessary for the program to function as intended. That'd be the life.

by arbingordon at 4:03 PM EST on December 22, 2009
Now for the FLAC issue. I totally agree with Tangotreats. The whole idea with mp3 is compression, and the idea with VBR is compression with better quality. If you really want lossless, why don't you just rip a WAV file and skip the compression altogether? I don't really understand the FLAC craze. CD quality really isn't all that high anyway! (2 channels, 44100 Hz, 16 bit) There is going to have to be an upgrade to quality and recording medium some time in the future anyway, so compression will continue to be an issue as file size will increase. The majority of the buyers that will own 100 or so CD's won't have 10 TB (i'm just throwing a number out there) of hard disk space to accomodate the larger lossless files of the new media.

I have to say, I do agree with the bolded part.
by hcs at 4:50 PM EST on December 22, 2009
I think he's saying that the "new media" will be roughly 10 TB for 100 discs. Which, yes, is ridiculous, but not as odd your interpretation.

Woo, projection, I somehow assumed that you were arguing that he thought 100 CDs were 10 TBs, since that was my first reading. Nothing in your post indicates that...

by Mouser X at 1:02 AM EST on December 27, 2009
I wanted to say "Get rid of X", but you don't have any tracks from Megaman X, so it wouldn't apply very well. :/

Honestly, no, I have no suggestions. Essentially the only music I listen to comes from video games, or Weird Al. In the rare case that it's not from a game, that usually means it's indirectly related to a game. Such as the OST to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. Or, occasionally, anime OSTs.

So, sorry, but I don't have anything useful to add here. I was somewhat bored, and wanted to make a witty comment about removing X, but since you didn't have anything from any of the X things I know of (mainly MMX, as stated above, though X-Men would also have worked), my comment is essentially useless. Mouser X over and out.
by JILost at 3:24 AM EST on December 27, 2009
My taste is starting to get a lot like that. I still have a few mainstream things seep in now and then, though, and there's a lot left over from growing up.

I'm with you on the Weird Al. In the same way that I've collected every Castlevania CD and every Zelda CD, I've collected every Weird Al CD. Even once his jokes get old (and admittedly I don't find his albums terribly funny when they come out over the last few years), the production is phenomenal and the performances are great so it's never a pain to listen to his stuff even if one has to tune out the lyrics a bit. He does good work all around and a lot of people fail to appreciate or even notice that.

I also could have included the X-Files theme. Or Dracula X. Or something from Xenogears/saga. But none of those are copies of anything from the 80s, so that's a moot point. (Technically Megaman X is, but the only song copied from anything 80s is the stage select in the first game, and that doesn't really count.)

It's not clear how you want to delimit genres to be covered or if it's an 80s rock themed covers only disc, so my list includes some rock to rock covers and debateable 'rock' songs. I also advice you to check TPB's covers compilations since part of this job has already been done. Sounds fun, something I'd listen from time to time, just to see how weird a tune would sound made into another genre. Also, do you plan to selected studio recordings only or live stuff, too? I'd get rid of live stuff only because most of those
recordings suck, and because too many artists play covers in their genres during concerts.

I think the aim was a kind of "New Wave"-to-Rock thing, centering on the 80s "pop" I grew up on redone in some kind of heavy guitar style. Blue Monday is definitely a candidate, I'd forgotten about that one. Despite Metallica being one of my favorite bands, as far as sticking to the "covers of stuff I grew up on" theme, all I could really pull from that list is "Die, Die My Darling" -- though I do love about half of the Metallica versions you listed. Same with the Nirvana stuff -- I like the Nirvana versions, but I'm not familiar with the originals, so those -are- the "originals" as my experience goes.

I think the idea is more that the songs I picked mostly weren't so guitar-oriented in the first place, so it's cool hearing them in that style and actually...fitting. Especially Boys of Summer....That one is simultaneously amusing and awesome, in a kind of "This shouldn't sound good in this style but mysteriously does" way.

Also, I agree with your take on live recordings. I'm going more for studio stuff, but something like Unplugged is fine since it isn't drowned in audience sounds and reverb. It's very "dry", so it works.

Last, what does TPB stand for? I'm definitely looking into some covers compilations -- especially since Wikipedia mysteriously doesn't have a "list of songs from the 80's with cover versions" entry -- even though they seemingly have lists of every other imaginable topic.
by nensondubois at 1:53 PM EST on December 27, 2009

Why did they use so much reverb on the Final Fantasy XII OST? It's like it needs a whole lot of fat trimmed. Everything sounds slurred. The PSF2s are actually better, low-quality sounds and all. The PSF2s provide a better mix as well.

Okami similarly suffers from over-reverb, but it's not nearly as bad.

Stop ruining synth soundtracks! :( Odin Sphere is an example of the right way to do it.
by Chupperson Weird at 12:12 AM EST on January 18, 2010
I personally think the reverb gives FFXII a much more correct, realistic orchestral sound. There are a few instances of being able to hear certain things better in the PSF2s though for some reason.
by valiant at 2:59 AM EST on January 18, 2010
I really dislike the sound banks used in FFXII. They're trying way too hard to sound orchestral and fail so miserably at it. FFX's is way superior.

We now take a first person view, from Guy's perspective. He is looking at some Other Guy, who is looking back at him with disapproval.
