Look what I found while snooping around the real site (editing the URL), trying to legitimately activate my old purchased games. Sonic the Hedgehog, Vectorman, etc:

http://gamebundles.real.com/gamebundles/

http://gamebundles.real.com/gamebundles/migrationInfo.packages

They don't support these Sega games anymore. But you can still download the fully working demos! I managed to unlock any RealArcade game years ago by simply copying a hidden, unpacked-at-runtime EXE. Wonder if it still works. Never worked for the Sega games, though. :(

Nope, the web-based client introduced some DRM crap.

Look for a program called ProtectionID on the Net.

Scan the main EXEs and tell me whats the result

This morning, I had one of the weirdest dreams I've had in awhile. It involved the group/team of actors from NCIS (my brother was watching it, and I happened to see it right before I went to bed), fighting off a Zombie Apocalypse, which was actually caused by a virus which was brought to Earth by the Transformers (accidentally). I don't remember a lot of the dream, but the scenario itself is completely whacked! I can see in my "mind's eye," Agent Gibbs (in a business suit), holding some hi-tech laser rifle/cannon, talking to Optimus Prime (obviously, the Autobots would want to help fix the problem they accidentally created), while the area around them is smoldering and crumbling. In the background, you can hear screams, "gunfire", and see shambling, rotting bodies pass through the streets.

I had another dream which involved Star Trek, time travel, and Donald Duck, but unfortunately, I don't remember that one as well as I'd like to. Mostly all I remember is that it took place almost entirely underwater, in a decimated and completely submerged city. Lots of submersible spaceships were involved. And floppy discs, with a dial-pad on them.

As for "How I spend my time", maybe I've been reading too much Axe Cop. Although there's never really been anything on Axe Cop that resembles my dreams, the comic is often weird/absurd enough, that it's possible my mind (in my sleep) just emulates it. Or something. Mouser X over and out.

Went to PAX East in Boston this weekend. Various things were awesome.

Heard The Protomen, Anamanaguchi, Metroid Metal, MC Frontalot, Video Game Orchestra, Paul & Storm (one of whom was wearing an Axe Cop shirt), and Jonathan Coulton.

Got to play Miegakure and ask the developer stupid questions.

Learned how to play Magic The Gathering again (free decks with swag bags), won a few games against my brother before he figured things out and crushed me repeatedly.

Watched Gabe and Tycho spontaneously arm wrestle on audience request.

Saw the first few episodes of the next season of Red vs Blue.

Anamanaguchi announced they'll be doing the music for the upcoming Scott Pilgrim game (and played the theme song), and Coulton mentioned that he's doing the ending song for Portal 2 (though he promised it wouldn't be as good).

Recently I checked what game soundtracks i was missing and noticed that not a single oddworld munch's oddysee soundtrack is available.

Found out the sounds are in a custom rof file that was already reverse engineered, but the files that came out couldn't be used.

However the creators were stupid to use zlib and keep all zlib comment strings in the executable next to the signature of these files (defT), and not to my surprise the files were just zlibbed.
Now i have a bunch of sgt and dls files that work in DirectMusic producer playing the music in the game. It seems they all have 12 variations(didn't know the music was that dynamic) and the longest song is almost 9 minutes in length.

And abe's chanting is also a midi that is 20 minutes in length. Why did they do that?

For the rest i'm applying for jobs so i can make some money for a change :)

thanks to a $28 waste of money and permanently destroying an old laptop case i now have access to some old files, of which only 10 are interesting to me

kmdasm disassembles music data from various konami games to mml where i can then be talentless and port it to different systems. it supports about 5 games (poorly) and it's being made available for no other reason than laziness (surprise, surprise)

i'll upload the source and some sample dumps later. this was later on during the program's development.

So, I'm going to be moving soon (this month, most likely). The only reason I mention this, is because my new land-lord has apparently decided that I'm his new "tech guy". Today, I helped him fill out an online job application (admittedly, there was more to it than simply "fill in this text field", so I can sort of understand the confusion he had there), and helped him figure out how to use his new iPod. Much of the time I spent on the iPod, was familiarizing myself with iTunes (and the iPod, a little). After having done that, I can say that the iPod he's got is pretty nice. But I still hate iTunes. And I like my Gigabeat S60 more than I like his iPod. Though, I have to admit that having an on-board video camera and speaker are nice.

Anyway, I'm not sure if being designated as the "tech guy" is a good thing, or a bad thing.... I'm slightly worried that I'm going to get "called in" more than I want. But he's willing to pay money, and even gave me (significantly) more than I asked for. So, considering that, I don't have room to complain. For that kind of cash, it's probably not a bad thing after all.

So, yah, that's pretty much how I spent my time today. Oh, and being sick. I'm getting over a cold. :( Mouser X over and out.

I have this long standing urge to learn how to use trackers like ScreamTracker 3, Impulse Tracker v2.14, FastTracker II, and Adlib Tracker II properly so I can "port" some arcade music to MS-DOS PC.

What saddens me is, whenever I do find "mixed\arranged" versions of certain game music done on tracker software, it's done HORRIBLY WRONG... Like off key notes, bullshit samples, etc.

Since I've read (somewhere.. hope the info is true), that the OPL3 can invoke a four-operator mode, which involves pairing channels, reducing polyphony but allowing it to make more complex sounds, I could port some arcade music that uses any four-op FM chip from Yamaha, with a little ear by ear tracking and fine tuning.

As for Neo Geo games, or any games that use some from of PCM\ADPCM, if I could only get the samples ripped and converted to raw headerless 8-bit PCM, that combined with a four-op invoked OPL3, will probably do good enough for "emulating" arcade music that uses both FM Synthesis and sample based synthesis.

One thing I could probably fake with hand drawn samples would be wavetable synthesis (Namco WSG, C130 (or something..), Konami SCC, etc), the only thing that wont sound right would possibly be the lack of enveloping, but may still sound okay, DMG waveform channel can be perfectly used in tracker software if you just take the bytes from the wave register and save it as a headerless 8-bit unsigned PCM.

If I had a actual MSX2 equipped with a SCC, I could probably do something stupid like sync the two together with my PC and have the MSX2 play SCC sound data, while the PC does everything else, (OPL3 in Four-op mode, playback of tracked samples ,etc), would make a pretty funny (and somewhat dumb) video..

Either way, I'm way over my head and most of this is just speculation and theories anyways... I get sick of hearing bad "ports" of arcade music to tracker software, don't understand why it can't be done right with some people...
by SmartOne at 1:43 PM EDT on April 7, 2010
Probably because it's difficult.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 3:29 PM EDT on April 7, 2010
Difficult, yeah, and I'll admit there's some that, while, in some, the samples are questionable, yet the song arrangement is spot on to the original... But SOME on the other hand are just WAY out of whack, that it might take awhile to even fix it. (Let alone get it working properly with certain players, FMod specifically... while SchismTracker appears to be the only 3rd party IT implementation that strives for accuracy)

I'd love to contribute to the arrangement\tracker scene for video game music once I get acquainted with the necessary skills and brush up on it all. My main interest in tracker music is because that's what Unreal Engine 1 games, (Unreal 1, Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament 1) use for in-game music.

Coming back from holiday, got some ideas for shit:

* MGME (loads)
* A Facebook API interface (the one I seen needs Qt...ick) that does not need Qt. Needed for Winamp/foobar2000 song info spamming.
* Likewise, got a facebook developer account. Woot.
* Win32 version of OpenSPC..since the console one is bound to be functionally lacking. Already got snes_spc working perfectly with winmm, so all thats needed is a GUI and some form of mod/sample dumping....Charming :/
* Want to develop some echo/flange plugins for fb2k, but theres not much sample code out there for buffers that are needed when you change the amount of samples in a audio_sample and output it. Winamp is dead easy in this regard...you can specify the sample length in your process proc. :/
* Get some form of native streamripping in fb2k working. Funnily enough, it won't detect my custom protocol of httprip:// so the thing just...fails.

Back in 2003, I had a really good enchilada-type dish. Unfortunately, I never got the recipe. Recently, I've decided to attempt to recreate it (I know I'll fail miserably, because it was so long ago, that I can't possibly accurately remember what the dish was actually like. However, I'm just hoping for something that's sort of remotely close). I've done a few variations of enchilada recipes, and some of them have turned out well.

Anyway, I'm mentioning this here, because I'm not on a computer that I can bookmark/save stuff on, so I decided to post a few links here, since I know I'll be able to find them later. And no, I didn't name these.

That's one reason I don't bother with fb2k. If I'm going to be targeting a proprietary player I might as well do the one that everyone uses. Which is not to say that I make any effort to prevent it being used with another player, as Josh's vgmstream port demonstrates.
foobar is just somehow more repugnant in that way than Winamp... the profit motive I can sort of understand, but whatever foobar's excuse is doesn't seem honest.

@SmartOne

In that case, replacing everything to use XMPlay. All thats left is secure ripping....
by Mouser X at 10:17 PM EDT on April 16, 2010
Apparently, I'm in the minority here, these days. But I still use Winamp, and love it. Most of the stability issues people complain about have to do with individual plugins, and not actually Winamp itself. At least, that's the experience I've had. Yes, I've had problems with Winamp (I used to be "famous" for them), but in most instances, it could be traced to a specific plugin which was just plain wonky. Sometimes I still use those plugins, knowing full well that they cause problems. Other times, I've stopped using them (in_skool can do some awesome things, but geez is it buggy! I gave up on that one).

I tried XMplay, again, and I still don't see what it is about it that people like (excluding that you can get some old, screwy formats working in it. Which *could* be done in Winamp, but no one has written a plugin for it. :( Except in_skool. See above). Winamp serves my needs quite well, I like how it handles, I like using it. XMplay I find to be a nuisance. Mostly, I just want it to handle like Winamp, I guess.

Talking about replacements reminds me that Windows Explorer in Windows7 is tremendously frustrating! Frequently, it doesn't save my settings, often within the same session of usage. And, it doesn't scroll properly! I finally got fed up with it, and I started using UltraExplorer. While it has some quirks (frequently the columns resize after browsing away from a directory), at least it saves my settings! And it scrolls properly! And it's ridiculously configurable! I know that others here have recommended Total Commander, but I could never figure out how to set that up to resemble something I enjoyed using. As I'm sure you'll notice, UltraExplorer can be setup to look virtually identical to Windows Explorer (there's been numerous occasions when I mixed them up with each other). And although it can do that (which I like), it can also use tabbed windows, preview windows, command prompt (that's easy enough with Winkey, but it's nice that it can be done from within the UltraExplorer window), side-by-side folder browsing, and much more. With Total Commander, I always felt like I was a few years behind in computer usage. Not to mention that I never found it very usable. Largely, I miss the "folders" veiwpane, or what might be called the "directory tree list" (see here the window called "folders" on the left). If Total Commander has that, I never found it.

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that, frequently, I have a difficult time seeing what it is that others like so much in their "replacement" programs. I guess that, in that regard, it all comes down to personal preference. Winamp handles the way I want to use it, XMplay doesn't. And I don't think the issues I have with XMplay can be fixed through a GUI plugin (though, I also don't think it supports those either). "What issues do you have?" you may ask. Well, it doesn't respond the way I want it too. For me to get more detailed than that, would most likely require IRC/Skype, and/or a video conference.

Mostly, for me Winamp works well, and responds the way I expect. Why should I change it, when the complaints I have are so few, and infrequent? Worst case scenario, I use XMplay to create WAV files from the non-Winamp-supported fromats, and create some LOGGs/ADXs (though, obviously, this creates files of an extremely much larger size. :( ). Really though, those non-supported formats aren't something I severely miss, so I'm fine living without them.

Anyway, I guess that's my rant for the day. Sorry about the extended length of text. Hopefully someone at least finds it useful (I've really enjoyed UltraExplorer so far. You should give it a try!). Mouser X over and out.

Apparently there's a volume 1 (though, I don't think it's TV showtunes), and they're working on volume 3 right now. I'd download it now, but I'm not on a computer I can download from. but yeah, lots of weird differences between Linux and AIX. Which do you run into?
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 7:29 PM EDT on April 22, 2010
Just lost my fucking PC in a motherboard blow out. (God I hate VIA's chipsets...) The machine was quite old though, as far as I can remember the POST test's BIOS copyright dated around 2001-2004 or so.

I've been unable to get the drives to cooperate with the computers around this house, my father ordered a new one which I'm using to make this post, (Had to seriously remember my password and managed to figure it out to log back in here...) and it seriously pisses me off... Windows XP Professional x64 was *SUCH* a horrible OS... I'm on Windows7 now, so thankfully I can actually run "modern" programs properly and have a working webcam...

Not sure how long it will take to get me back up to track, I need to get a copy of FRAP's that works on Windows 7 properly, and maybe a new copy of Paint Shop Pro since the one I'm using is old and constantly goes unstable sometimes...

Here are the specs of my brand new computer:
Gateway DX4300
AMD Phenom II X4 810 Processer clocked at 2.60 Ghz
8.00 GB of DDR2 RAM
64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics integrated
Realtek High Definition Audio (This thing isn't that much of a joke surprisingly... Handles 24-bit 192000 Hz well enough for me, sounds more sharper than my previous PC's x-fi XtremeGamer soundcard ironically...)

As far as this PC goes, it does stuff *faster*... Even some programs that put my CPU usage to 100 only go as far as 50% or even 25%, so I'm happy with this machine, as long as it doesn't die on me anytime soon..

It's great to finally be back... just hoping I manage to salvage my current work together again..
by Josh W at 1:21 AM EDT on April 23, 2010
one of the main problems I run into is trying to get badly written code running on it. Mainly the problems are memory-related

For example, the code that runs on linux would allocate X bytes, but use X+20 bytes or w/e and it would segfault in AIX, so I need to fix other peoples bad code :(
by hcs at 1:34 AM EDT on April 23, 2010
One of the delightful treats of AIX is that you can dereference a null pointer by default...
I also find a lot of issues with alignment, and more with endianness assumptions (though that's more just a x86-centric problem).

That picture of the flowers almost looks like it could be a picture from Fragile Dreams. Obviously, it would require some modification, to help the parking garage look older. Excluding that, it definitely reminded me of the game.

For those interested, I strongly recommend that you give Fragile Dreams a look. In my experience, a game of this type is a rare treat. The setting/story really drew me in. At the very least, rent the game and try it out. Even playing the Japanese version (I downloaded the Japanese version, to see if it was worth it to get the U.S. version), in which I couldn't understand any of the language whatsoever, I had a really hard time putting it down. The atmosphere was amazing. Having played the Japanese version for hours, I decided I'd better stop, and wait for the U.S. release. Great game. Give it a try, at least once. Mouser X over and out.

Started coding again.

Clambake has been started. Laid out the basic foundation. Thanks to hcs for the links to IDA Pro and the N64 sigs. They certainly made things easier. Funnily enough, deciding on a basic framework has been the hardest, since OpenGL does not play nice and we have to fuck around with hooking toolbars and status bars....ick....At least fullscreen works perfect. After this gonna get started on the RDP/RSP emulation and try to get at least one game booting in wireframe.

Haven't worked on MGME yet, btw. Need to commit it to the SVN, too, that way I can easily work out what to do with it.

So there.

While I realize that very few (if any) people care, I have had in my mind an idea to create a "space cruise liner" for quite awhile now. Unfortunately, the parts that I had in mind to build it are no longer being manufactured by LEGO (in case you wonder what parts those might be, that would be part# 2408 and part# 2409). As such, I can't buy them from LEGO any more (I already called and asked). For awhile, I had given up hope of ever realizing my idea. But last night (uh, now...) I was bored/curious, and did a search for those pieces. And I have had success! There are numerous people reselling their LEGO pieces, and these parts are among the lot! Unfortunately, since I don't currently have a job, I can't afford to purchase them at this time. Nonetheless, for $10-$12 (plus shipping... Which is going to get expensive since they'd be shipping from Europe, from multiple people), I can get the 8 (1/4th dome) pieces, and 2-4 side panels I need.

In case you're wondering, I was planning on using the pieces to create a sort of "green house" or "viewing dome" for the top of the space cruise liner. The color I want is "transparent clear", but LEGO never released those parts in that color, so I'll have to settle for "transparent dark blue" (there's only 5 colors available, and "transparent yellow" or "transparent neon green" are $20 for one piece...).

Anyway, I posted that here, because I was quite excited to learn that the pieces I needed are available for somewhat reasonable prices. Yes, $1.50 (and up to $11) is expensive for 1 single LEGO piece (normally, when you buy a LEGO set, they average about $0.10 per piece), but considering the difficulty in obtaining this particular piece, I'd say the price isn't that bad. At least it's not $30 for one piece....

Oh, and on a slightly more related note (to games at least), I learned about Allods MMO (that's the European site. It has a little more content than the US site). One description I read of it called it "Skies of Arcadia, the MMO". Though, after doing so, they said not exactly, but that those who have played SoA will feel right at home. SoA is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. I'm very seriously tempted to try this game out, but my computer doesn't have internet access, and this PC that I'm using has a hard enough time rendering videos. I have very low hopes that it would run a 3D game very well.

Anyway, I was happy to find the LEGO pieces I've been wanting for years. Since, as I said earlier, it's likely no one cares, then please carry on. Mouser X over and out.

I remember playing with Lego... the good old times. For some reason, I like reading your posts Mouser X. :)

I remember having a platform of a mountain that had Lego spots on them. I built a few cool things with it when I was younger. Then I got some Star Wars Lego pieces which I thought was cool at the time.

It would be really cool if NEZplug++ could pan channels like NotSoFatso. That would make NSFs much more enjoyable.

Made a forum on my site for all mgme and clambake discussion.

Speaking of NotSoFatso, I'd like to have UNKNOWNFILE's version of that plugin, since NEZPlug++ totally screws with the N106 emulation. (Broke alot of homebrew songs for me...) And I can't gage the Sunsoft5B volume so that's balanced between the 2A03's volume. (In NEZPlug++ it plays so quiet for me it's hardly noticeable there even is a sound extension in Gimmick!)

I also would like better VRC7 emulation too.
by SmartOne at 12:55 AM EDT on May 1, 2010
NotSoFatso's settings must be deleted in plugin.ini for it to work with XMPlay. That's weird.

Uh, or not?

Why can't there be like just one plugin that works right? D:
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 9:23 AM EDT on May 1, 2010
Why can't people write player's for .IT properly? Some of them that I've seen are complete shit... SchismTracker seems pretty good, considering it's re-implementing ImpulseTracker, working hard to be as close as the original as possible.

NEZPlug++ would be, *the* one plugin that would work right for me if the VRC7 and N106 emulation didn't sound so horrible... And if the volume settings for the Sunsoft5B were adjusted so they actually sound audible alongside the 2A03.
by unknownfile at 8:00 PM EDT on May 1, 2010
ask and ye shall receive

this one looks like it was last altered in march. only problem is that you can't pan the vrc7 channels

i'm not going into older files to dig out older builds
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 10:05 PM EDT on May 1, 2010
Thanks UF. Now I wonder what happened to the NEZPlug++ website, if it was ever fully moved or such...

EDIT: Well, that's strange that a blank commandprompt window with winamp's name opens up all the time, but I swear this VRC7 emulation sounds so much better over that crappy one with NEZPlug... Thanks alot, seriously.

Tits working perfectly. No, that's not google translate or sexcite XD

The only one thing to complain about UF's notsofatso (errrm? <3 ) tits about loading 10k files, and see it crash when it reads metadata in the file 5000 needing to restart WA.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 7:46 PM EDT on May 2, 2010
How the hell could I missed that? Anyways thanks for the link, I'll stick with UF's notsofatso since he sure knows what the fuck he's doing with VRC7 emulation.

Going through a long and hard process of resurrecting a dead PC, managed to recover some data off of it before it eventually locked up in even safe mode...

I'm blaming my father's poor judgment, he should of just plugged in the rest of the hardware into the empty slots and disable the integrated ones... but instead he tried to get the "integrated soundblaster live" to work, which I think caused even more instability...

Looks like I'm in for a long hard ride... *sigh* I hate it when noone listens to me..

Working on a redone NES emulator, GB/GBC/GBA emu, and my Vectrex one.

Thats eating up all my time.
That and now learning a instrument and Warcraft III & other assorted PC games.
by RukarioGyiyg996 at 6:37 AM EDT on May 22, 2010
Speaking of "Vectrex" mudlord, I could sure use a emulator for one right now, since I never really did manage to beat Cosmic Chasm and I'm not sure if my real Vectrex even works now.

The only one I can find on searches and Zophar.net is some DOS Vectrex emulator, would anyone recommend that?
by mudlord at 7:55 PM EDT on May 22, 2010
Then in that case, you can be the first one to test it.

I may be confusing my internets here, but you're working on VBA-M, mudlord? Yeah?

If so, would it be acceptable to make a bug report to you about a hanging bug in a game (one that I'm not experiencing when loading the same save and doing the same thing in the latest VBA-RR)?

My old PC is back online again! And even better, the SPDIF port is active... But sucks is that I don't have anything to accept the input..

And the MIDI playback is still screwed up, I'm forever putting the blame on Creative's BS drivers.

Does Nintendo enhance some of the textures for Virtual Console N64 games? I know they are running at a higher resolution, but some of the text and "paper" objects in Mario Kart 64 look nice and sharp. Maybe it's my CRT and component cables being awesome.

And then the sucky audio... sucks. Scratchy scratch. Pop.

Hey, someone design me a collegiate-style shirt that says

FINITE STATE

with the motto "A tradition of transition". If you can work the pun "motto a.k.a. 'regular expression'" in there that'd be a nice bonus. Seal could look something like

I'll front the cost to make a shirt out of it, and we'll split any proceeds.

Alternately find that it already exists and win one (1) internet.

Working on another high school project about "values" on a specific course at school. They got themselves this fame of being the "most problematic" on the entire school. It's rather small for anyone's standard (701 students, yeap, exactly 701 dunno if they (school board) planned that) but I find them the most intelligent group of students in my, I recognize, small time partly teaching (no teaching job yet but teaching practices, which is about *theorically* 4-6 hours of actual class/lab work, errrrr, and on which I'm highly slacking on it, *see almost last paragrah*).

Curious how I "love" (rather find interesting) the group of students I face at the moment, while every other of the professor approach them with fear, and all these preconceptions.

So back to the topic of values, it'll involve life-stories instead of an expositive only lecture about family, sex, good communication and whatover other aspect of life, social interaction, and even religion you'd consider as a value. Life story, so that they (my students) hear other people their age (I'll bring two 16 and 17 kids) to hear thier past history and how they learned to appreciate other ways to treat people and see life as a whole.

Also, girlies. They can be such a motivating force, though I guess that's not what one would want from people, but it's nice not to always rely on yourself for everything. Ohhhh, I'd rather precipate, motivate internal changes within me and my perspective on life. Oh girlies...

Back to work/part time slacking \o

Guggenheim's Mistake! Ch 12 by hcs at 10:59 PM EDT on June 5, 2010
Just spent a few hours on some minor edits with my coauthor before pushing out Chapter 12 of The Mushroom Wars: Guggenheim's Mistake!
It can always use more editing, but we try to keep it somewhat rough for that improv/deranged quality. Ch 12 has one of my favorite scenes! Attempted murder and manslaughter and murder! And a man so full of himself he ought to have been named Hugh!

Bris.

Um, there are relatively few puns.

[edit]

It's rather small for anyone's standard (701 students ...

WHAAAAT?! This isn't so much small as it is HUGE. Good luck!

wooopsie! Made a smallish mistake. 701 students enrolled on the entire school, out of which about 70 are directly related to me, and about 35 are the problematic course.

sorry, hehehe.

This might have already been mentioned on IRC, but since I haven't been on in awhile, I wouldn't know. But I thought it was worth mentioning here.

E3 is going on this week (as I'm sure most of you already know), and Nintendo held their "round table" discussion. Based on this article (see the 7:06 mark), it sounds like there's a very good possibility that the new Zelda will have an orchestrated soundtrack! WooHoo!!! Even if an OST isn't released, we should be able to extract the audio from the disc! Much easier than the hassle that had to be gone through to get the Twilight Princess music!

Anyway, I thought that was well worth posting about, even if people have already heard about it. Mouser X over and out.
