Hard drive failure. It's not even courteous enough to show a nice blue screen of death or make obnoxious noises, oh no. Makes a program at a time unresponsive, Explorer freezes, my mouse is happily free for a few moments before it too succumbs to the freeze.

Then I have to hold the power button for a few seconds. Kinda tough when you can't do anything.

At least I'm pretty sure it's the hard drive. Had this problem a couple years ago with Windows installed on the same drive. Thought I'd dig it out and give it another try.

all completely valid. Woo.

I've had a huge nostalgia kick. Played around with DOSBox.

Reader Rabbit 1:

Plays without sound. I can't figure out why. It's supposed to be "IBM/Tandy & compatibles Version."

The Playroom (with Playworld demo):

The portion that should work (The Playroom) doesn't load because of a missing abc.dat file. I can't find the original install discs. Probably trashed. This version of the game doesn't exist on the internet. I swear.

Treasure Mathstorm!:

I own the CD version which has crappy General MIDI. The old FM sound is sweet.

Treasure Galaxy!:
...doesn't exist on the internet. Never actually owned it, but somehow I had it on my computer at some point way back. It was too new to be a DOS game. It was released on a CD. The only remnant left that I could find from the old Windows 95 install was a program icon of a little yellow star dude. :(

Thank you so much!

After the false positive virus and wading through the hacker/cRaCKeR crap (never understood why they type like that,) I found the fully working DOS version! Comparing my remnant icon TGXWINCD.ICO to this version's TGX.ICO, I must have played a newer, CD version. This one was originally on three floppies and the evil install/extract program insisted the game be installed from floppies. Evil.

Anyway, finally got the files extracted, and it works!

Now, if only you could find The Playworld/Playroom, figure out why Reader Rabbit doesn't have sound, and find the version of HyperStudio with the old tape deck.

Xbox 360 version of The Orange Box boasts 1080p on the back of the box.
PS3 version of The Orange Box is only 720p.
However, I've read that Microsoft likes to advertise the up-scaled resolution instead of the native resolution, like Sony does. Apparently the Xbox 360 up-scales everything. Basically false advertising. We'll see what EA has to say about their crappy PS3 port (the crappiest part is a huge sound distortion glitch that makes the game unplayable after an indefinite amount of playtime.)

Sounds like another reason to dislike the Microsoft Xbox, with the STILL UNRESOLVED Red Ring of Death. I witnessed one this past week. Third one for those people.

The Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories streams generously provided by arbingordon have pops in them, just like in-game. Maybe Mr. Square-Enix Sound Guy should listen to the files after he encodes them? That's just too obvious.

Irony by hcs at 7:09 PM EDT on July 10, 2009
There's two printers in our local copy room at work, one is a big B&W network copy machine, the other is a color laser. A coworker was trying to print out a document which features the IBM logo. We have a special font for that, so it's actually the letters I,B,M in that font. The B&W printer handled this ok, but the color one simply left out the logo. Apparently it doesn't have that font and the drivers weren't handling it correctly.
Now, the irony:
This is an IBM printer, said logo is right on the front of the machine.

@SmartOne
This isn't surprising since SQEX has done a bad job at looping streams sometimes. Actually, It's quite common in games such as Unlimited Saga, Dawn of Mana, KH Re:CoM, Musashi: Samurai Legend. and even Final Fantasy XIII has noticable clicking at the loop.

my experiences:
nintendo 64: 11 years old and only the cpu fan is rattling probably for being dusty. Only froze because of action replay, 3rd party controller+controller pak or particular game bugs. Transfer pak is unstable.
playstation 2: froze a few times and i have to be careful with the Soul Calibur III PAL save-file bug . Controller is malfuctioning lil' bit.
xbox: if i ignore morrowind crashes seems to have disc read errors a lot. Could read audio cd-rw's, not cd-r's, but can't do that anymore.
xbox 360: so many disc reading errors. I moved the box further away from the subwoofer and the reading errors are less common. This has often to do with the layout of files on the disc and how the game reads them that he needs to move the disc laser all the time which he doesn't like. Still got a few hard crashes even on xbox live arcade games.
gamecube: no issues besides about 2 crashes. I don't use it much anymore since i can play it on the wii.
wii: many disc read errors, especially with Super Paper Mario and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Makes a lot of noise when reading discs.

Is this subwoofer proximity thing more than just a myth? Do the magnets really screw up your junk?

I've had speakers mess up a TV. They were pressed against it though and unshielded. It made certain sections have a green tint to them. I had never heard of the problem until it happened to me.

You only need to worry if the speakers are unshielded. For example, some surround sound systems come with shielded speakers for the ones that will be in front (and likely near other equipment), and unshielded for the ones in the rear. I'm not sure if sub-woofers are ever shielded, so you may want to investigate that.

I had my dvd player on my tv, this was enough for a 2 inch pink line in the screen :o)
by Elven Spellmaker at 9:04 PM EDT on July 30, 2009
I havn't ever seen a shielded sub, last year I set up my P.C. on the ground with the sub about 20cm away from the monitor to the left.

Suffice it to say, I basically couldn't see anything on the screen properly. =/

So I moved it 1 metre behind it and it was fine.

I've been cleaning my room for about 2 weeks... I haven't done so in at least a year (likely 2), so I suppose that's my reason for it taking so long. And I'm still not done. :(

Currently, I'm attempting to clean out from beneath my desk, which contains wires, cables, cords, notebooks, a phone, miscelaneous paper, USB cables and attachments, a Gamecube, and a UPS. Oh, and a LEGO box, 2 PCs (3 including a laptop I don't use anymore), 2-3 power supplies (only one of which is in use), a VCR, some hard drives which aren't hooked up (one of which doesn't work), and, if I recall correctly, a picture in a frame. I'm probably forgetting something (I didn't include dust bunnies, but they're there too), but that sort of gives an idea of how terribly disorganized the area under my desk is.

Not to mention that, since I'm not riding the bus anymore, I don't have the opportunity to play it while I walk to/from the bus stop.

In other words, not well. I picked it up the other day, and was disappointed at how much I had lost. :/ Mouser X over and out.

Figuring out which Java JAR contains the javax.persistence package is a pain. Acquiring that JAR is painful.
Random copyright thought experiment by hcs at 11:33 AM EDT on August 11, 2009
Time sharing a book is not, as I understand it, a violation of copyright. That is, physically passing it along to 100 people in series should be permitted, while allowing all 100 simultaneous access (e.g. they all read together, or we unbind the book and allow each page to be distributed to a different person, or even arrange a system of mirrors so they can all see the page at the same time) would conceivably fall under "public performance". This is understandable: even if no copy is fixed, if many people have simultaneous access to the work, they each have a "virtual" copy. This simultaneity isn't strictly in the physical sense. We can have the aforementioned system of mirrors set up so that we time multiplex the view between simultaneous viewers rapidly enough that it is still readable (say we flip it between two viewers at 120 Hz; even without persisting phosphors (which could constitute fixing a copy) the persistence of vision would allow it to be read). We could argue that only one person is seeing it at once, but I don't think that the law would make such a distinction and would consider this as much public performance as if every viewer could see it simultaneously.

The question, then, is at what frequency does this setup become illegal? If it is 1 cycle per day, we essentially have a lending library with a maximum checkout time of (one day) / (interested parties), which the apparatus simply makes more convenient than returning to a central location. Does it become illegal when the physical eye no longer notices the absence? What what about when it persists long enough for a single paragraph to be read and mulled over in the intervening delay? What if it is a reference work, where requests for entries are queued up and the entry is only displayed to one person long enough to read, then automatically passing on to the next client? That much could be done mechanically with the physical book, even.

I'm proposing that this can all be done without mechanically copying information. These things would be easier to do if we substitute a video camera, easier still if we allow the book to be stored digitally, but these involve making copies in some sense, while I assume that the natural action of photons is not so construed. I suppose the optical lending library might infringe anyway, if any device allowing access by a number of people, even serially, to the same book is criminal no matter how closely it is an analog to something that is allowed when less convenient. That convenience factor was something I was trying to get at with the frequency argument.

IBM Lotus Notes 7 has, among other things, a nearly useless undo system. Typically there is exactly one level of undo. Sometimes, though, there is none, like when removing a row or column from a table.
Oh, but they realized this, it was an intentional design decision, so rather than remove it as soon as you click the button, a dialog box pops up saying:
"This operation cannot be undone. Do you wish to proceed?"
with Yes/No buttons.
What operation? If I hit the "delete row" button by mistake, which is about all this kind of dialog is good for, when I really meant the "delete column" button, I will get the exact same dialog. Yes, I had intended to do some operation, but which?
Also, this is a modal dialog. It steals focus from the main window, so the blinking cursor which would tell you which row or column you have chosen to delete is hidden, and you can't get it back without dismissing the dialog.

Consider two icons:
- An empty file folder hanging open at 45 degrees, with an arrow indicating an opening motion.
- A blank sheet of paper, upper left corner dog-eared, with a pencil pointing near the bottom.

What do these mean? The folder looks pretty obviously like it is opening, I would guess that this would open an existing document. And the blank sheet of paper with a pencil... seems like that would make a new document and start editing it. I'm wrong (every time, I have to summon up the tooltips). The folder is "new", and the pencil and paper is "edit".

-----

Say I need to look at two documents at once. I've got two monitors for just this purpose, and Notes has the feature to break a document out its main window into its own window (Open In New Window), which I can drag over to the other monitor. All's well, this works OK, though the phrasing of the command doesn't tell you that it removes the tab from the other window.
So I Alt-Tab between the windows, merrily scrolling each along as I compare them. I begin to get confused, however, as it becomes apparent that I don't actually have any visual indication of which is the active window. Somehow Alt-Tabbing between these two Notes windows leaves the title bars of both in the active state. When viewing a document no cursor is displayed (unless a link is highlighted), so there is no indication of which window has focus.

There's lots more where that came from, these are just the ones I encountered in the space of a few minutes which spurred me to write this up. Maybe these are fixed in Notes 8, which we are being required to update to in a week, but I double doubt it.

Notes 8 addresses all of these issues, yay.
Table operations can be undone, the edit icon is gone and the new icon looks like a page with a little plus sign in the upper left, and alt-tab works normally.
Plus! selection works like every other application on earth (rather than sometimes involving highlighting, sometimes involving little check marks).
Still wouldn't wish it on anyone, though.
