I've been pestering everyone I know about this, as soon as we can find a dump of it we'll be able to determine a) if it can be ripped with current tools b) what to do with the audio.
The title screen still shows HAL Laboratory as copyright holders, so there might be a slimm chance of the HPS format used despite the developer being Game Arts (well, at least most of the team).
This has been uploaded more than three weeks ago. I doubt it's the real thing.
Give the game some time. There are people ripping it at the moment, of that I'm sure, but the ISO probably won't surface until a few days after the release - as it's always the case.
Yes, I'm very curious about this (and what he posted is one of the two bazillion fake torrents of SSBB). I keep hearing rumors of it being dual-layer, but I don't think I believe that since the modchips that support dual-layer discs (the burned kind), their support doesn't work reliably on some systems, so I'm kind of doubtful of there being any Wii games that are dual-layer.
#smashbros on EFNet is full of speculation but it sounds like they have a dump are are working on fixes. Topic: "Ripping 100% but with possible errors at layer break. D2CKey & Cyclowiz working but no WiiKey yet. Most of the team is taking a break for a few hours"
After reading all these facts, I think we should start a religon...Brawlism. :P
by Only3Penguins at 10:21 PM EST on February 1, 2008
Would it be Internet sacrilege to imply that Brawl could beat Chuck Norris at arm wrestling?
Oh, and also, I think I heard something about this game having some of that stuff. You know the stuff. You listen to it and it's good. Music! It has that music stuff. That would be... that'd be nice to have... for... listening to....... I want the music.
Any new developments from the guys working on the game dump?
Now we will have to wait until it is available for download.

Super Smash Bros. is a game played by idiots who like to change the rules to the degree that the game becomes the most generic and bland fighting game ever. I mean, seriously. Final Destination is the worst fucking stage ever, there's absolutely no variation in the stage at all. In fact, they shouldn't make any more SSB's, they should let the fans make their own crappy games, much like the Sonic fans have done. Not to say that the Sonic fans aren't retarded, but that's a different story.
But the music is awesome. That you can't deny. And I'm looking forward to downloading it.
For what may be the first time I can remember, I 100% side with UF on something. It's just a bunch of CGIs smacking each other around without any substantial reason for doing so (and don't tell me the single-player mode is reason enough - wouldn't these people work TOGETHER to fight off a weird shadowy thing rather than maul each other? It's Diddy Kong Racing-tier plot holes all over again). No stage in this one has more than 5 platforms except for that weird DK scrolling one where the platforms don't fit with the backdrop period ... and speaking of backdrops, the ratio of creativity put into the playable areas of the stage vs. the amount of detail put into the freaking BACKDROPS is quite shameful.
Now I got that out of my system ... I can be called a heretic for not acknowledging the game as God. As always.
The music is good though, agreed. Even if I can't for the life of me ever see that SMB remix (which is one of my favorites from the game so far) working in any Smash game. Ever.
I\\\'m sorry, what? by Maple at 1:15 AM EST on February 2, 2008
I'm not one of those strict-rule following "pro" players but I do understand that they choose Final Destination because it has no hazards. Their aim is to remove all random elements from the game. Not my cup of tea but to each their own.
And don't pass judgment on this game's single-player until we know more about how it plays out. This one is supposed to have a more substantial story written by a Final Fantasy scenario writer and I believe the only fighting done in story mode is against against non-playable bosses or between established hero/villain pairs.
Also anyone who sees cutscenes from this game's single-player and doesn't get all giddy has no business calling himself a gamer. Unless, I suppose, you have a preference against Nintendo's stable of characters to begin with.
ITT: drama by unknownfile at 1:55 AM EST on February 2, 2008
The "game's single-player?" Let's go with the pattern so far:
1) Figures come alive 2) Animated figures beat the shit out of each other 3) Animated figures beat the shit out of a gigantic hand and its psycho brother, thus killing themselves in the process.
BEST STORYLINE EVER HURR HURR
In all honesty though, I do like the SSB series. I just hate the rabid fanboys who defend their stupidity when we all know that they should just be playing a different game in the first place. In fact, if I can get my hands on a Wii, I'll probably buy it.
Talking about Sonic fan-games, I can't help but wonder what's wrong with you people. If Sonic Robo Blast 2 isn't mentioned, then you're missing out. To me, it is a *very* surprisingly advanced game (development-wise at the least), for a fan-game. Give it a try. It's one of the best Sonic games I've ever played. Then again, I really suck at 2D side-scrollers, so that might be why I like this game.
Sorry to get off the topic of SSBB, but if Sonic fan-games are going to be mentioned, then please do it right. Mouser X over and out.
UF, what you described is Classic Mode (i.e. the short single-player mode in Melee and Brawl modeled after the 64 version's single-player). That, I will admit, does fit the description you gave. But since when does a multiplayer game even need a sensible storyline? For that matter, since when does DKR either? Games where story isn't the main focus can afford to have stories that aren't airtight.
But anyway, I'm talking about the Subspace Emissary story mode, which is predominantly a side-scrolling beat 'em up with Smash Bros. mechanics. It's reported to take between 7 to 10 hours to play through. The good guys team up against new villains, and the new villains seem (from what I've seen) to have established villains (Bowser, Ganondorf, etc.) working for them somehow. So in other words, no illogical battles like you've mentioned. Established good guys fighting new and established bad guys in battles that make sense from a narrative point of view.
Most of the scenes in the game's intro are cutscenes taken from this story mode: http://youtube.com/watch?v=C8KHUmADIO0. And some sample gameplay: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Qc0EuCDE04w
Actually, the first stage of the story mode actually seems to establish the entire concept of trophy characters fighting trophy characters in the narrative context as friendly battles. It opens with Mario vs. Kirby, after which the loser is turned back into a trophy. After the fight, the winner taps the trophified loser, the loser turns back to normal, and the shake hands and wave to the crowd together.
by unknownfile at 11:08 AM EST on February 2, 2008
Whether it's classic mode, adventure mode or whatever mode, you're still a bunch of trophies fighting against a hand or whatever.
But enough about gameplay.
crediar has got a dump of the disc, but he hasn't posted the music yet. Lazy bastard.
To each it's own, but seriously, I don't care if the game has a story so long as I'm having fun. I have, with past Smash Bros, so I'm certain I'll like Brawl.
Regarding number of platforms in stages, I was pretty sure some of the more recently-revealed stages had some more variety. But you get a stage designer in Brawl, and that's just awesome.
Reading up on Smash World Forums, I found a torrent on The Pirate Bay that's made up of all streams that are playable with in_cube. I dunno if I'd be allowed to link to it though...
It's the only torrent under the "audio" category with "Smash Bros Brawl" in its title. :P
Hmm (My review of the music - beware all ye worshippers of the game!) by P_L at 10:16 PM EST on February 2, 2008
I didn't feel like downloading the full torrent right off the bat (I don't think I even have a client anymore if I ever got one ...), so I took a look at some individually-hosted MP3s elsewhere of some of the songs from the list on the website of some of the songs I wanted to hear most (Mario Kart and DKC stuff mostly) to decide whether 980 MB was worth it, and ...
... Ouch. They completely destroyed a large number of the songs with awful ear-bleeding techno effects (and occasionally inappropriately-placed SFX), a lot of weird senseless and poorly-chosen removal/addition of melodies, and an apparent inability to keep background parts and melodies in the SAME KEY on a few songs. (The "Yoshi's Island comes to mind most for that last one ...)
And the acoustic tracks that don't use awful electronic mutations tend to lack something ... where's the "oomph" on those orchestra hits in the Space Armada theme? It's all treble - it needs some strong bass. And the Animal Crossing title theme (why is this even in a game about characters beating the snot out of each other?!) is ... totally empty. No more than a melody line and one background sound at any time. Come on, people. Where's the substance?
The one thing that I truly, honestly think the modern "Our games all suck but that's okay as long as we can put our mascots into nonsensical worlds and situations and make millions of moneys because people worship us"-based Nintendo wouldn't possibly screw up ... and they do.
The Star Wolf theme and a couple others, however, are in fact quite good IMHO. But that one and the others I like are really just covers of the original songs with no arrangement done to them whatsoever, so ... yeah.
Well overall, this is a little disappointing. :(
But still, great to finally hear the music in full. Always interesting to hear new arrangements for me, no matter how unpleasant they turn out to be in the end.

Will this soundtrack be put up in the bonus folder here eventually? Or should I stick with this slow-ass torrent?
I may put it up but I think I'll wait a bit. I've been getting over 100kB/s for a while now, the swarm is fast enough, perhaps it is your end of the connection at fault.
Just a warning, in_cube's brstm looping is far from perfect. Several tracks (A09, C05, C09 I've noticed so far) have an audible pop at the loop point. I don't know if this is specific to brstm or if all DSP-derived formats have had this and I'm just more sensitive to it now, but I'm fairly sure that I would have noticed it had this been a problem before. It may be that they're using a new encoder that requires sub-14-sample accuracy, which in_cube can't provide right now. vgmstream provides this by design. I'll see if an implementation of brstm works any better in there.
I've come across something interesting... When I compared some of the songs in SSBB (such as White Land from F-Zero X), to the original track (an MP3 rip from the F-Zero X Expansion Kit), the right and left tracks were reversed!
I then checked several other songs between the SSBB rip and various rips (of different formats) from their original game.
[Zelda Ocarina of Time] Gerudo Valley: reversed (USF rip from here) [F-Zero GX] Casino Palace: same (MP3 rip) [Super Mario 64] Bob-omb Battlefield: same (USF rip from here) [Smash Bros Brawl] Intro Theme: same (swf from Smash Bros Dojo) [Smash Bros Melee] Giga Bowser: same (MP3 rip)
Hmm, sounds like anything they already had in a stream they just used directly, but those that were resynthesized were redone backwards.
Already streamed: F-Zero GX Casino Palace (stream in the game) SSBB Intro (obviously) SSBM Giga Bowser (was this a streamed track?) SM64 Bob-omb Battlefield (sounded like an unimproved rip from the OST)
Resequenced: Z64 Gerudo Valley (they definitely redid the synth on the Ocarina of Time tracks, at least Hyrule Field) F-Zero X White Land (this was never on a soundtrack so they might not have had a high-quality stream on hand already)
yeah, put it in the Plugins folder. You may also need the VC++ Redistributable package to make it work: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=32bc1bee-a3f9-4c13-9c99-220b62a191ee&displaylang=en
Even with the songs just being dumped in there, a looping version of those GC Zelda tracks is awesome.

Fun fact: Nearly all the Earthbound tracks are rearrangements from Mother. While I like the SNES/SFC Earthbound/Mother 2 soundtrack more the tunes are largely redone from the earlier NES/FC Mother. Your bit of pedantry for the day!
As information: I came about a Page called Zophar´s Domain (http: // www.zophar.net/usf/) to you beacuse here I can get a lot of USF Soundtracks. I do not know the Page which Primeblue has called (NeoGAF). Then I saw that Gamecube Sounds are playable in Winamp, too and I enter the Forum to get more Information about the In_Cube Soundtracks and where I can get them and so I heard about the Bonus Folder. Are there difficulties if I know from the Bonus folder?
by unknownfile at 10:02 AM EST on February 4, 2008
yes, there are difficulties with the bonus folder. mostly that everyone ends up exceeding the bandwidth when people find out about it.
I understand the problem now. But how many people out there do know about folder? Maybe we can solve this problem in such a way that one gives a password to everybody which are announced in the forum and no one else comes into the folder. This was just an Example. ;)
by Only3Penguins at 11:47 AM EST on February 4, 2008
Passwords sound like a good idea and I say that as someone who might not even be given a password, considering I haven't been here long and don't really have anything to contribute personally.
An alternative is just to refrain from ever mentioning the bonus folder's existence in this forum and leave it up those of us who already know about it to check on it from time to time to see if anything new is there. If anyone new stumbles across this forum and asks about where to find streaming audio, we just... direct them somewhere else. Might not be as effective as passwords, but it might at least reduce the number of newcomers.
by unknownfile at 11:56 AM EST on February 4, 2008
No, the problem is that there are lurkers on this board. As soon as someone posts the SSBB files, the link will be mass-posted and the server will be down for a day, and they'll complain about the server being down while disregarding the fact that they're the fuckwads who took it down in the first place.
crediar, on the other hand, had a better solution to this mess. Too many people were linking to a file on his server (that contained the list of files on the SSBB disc) and the clever minds on IRC got him to redirect a bunch of idiots to shock images. And oh god were these people idiots, thinking that someone actively involved in the Wii hacking scene with absolutely no connection to Nintendo or affiliates had obtained the SOURCE CODE FOR SSBB, when he just pulled a list of files off a DVD.
No wonder SSB fans always change the rules to make the game boring: they're fucking idiots.
Seeing as newcomers are the ones making suggestions, I find this discussion very amusing.
It's not broken yet, so I doubt that anything will be done. There has been discussion about this for years, and nothing else seems to work. The only thing that may work is an external host of some sort that would be willing to be leached. However, I would think that the traffic would be such that it wouldn't last that long.
Let's just remain hush-hush about the issue and not mention it again shall we?
by PokeParadox at 12:04 PM EST on February 4, 2008
I think the best thing to do is keep the bonus folder for "trusted" members that have lurked around here for years, and also those that can actually use unplayable files to reverse engineer players for them, etc. Then periodically put torrents online... But as previously mentioned, this has been discussed and discussed and nothing really changes.
One solution was to webseed a torrent, but it's problematic getting webseeds to play nice with servage hosting...
The easiest way to settle this, of course, is to just leave the very busy torrent.
SUper Smash Bros Brawl & BRSAR... by celebi23 at 12:25 PM EST on February 10, 2008
So apparently, the 40ish missing tracks from the SSBB OST is in a 99.2MB called "smashbros_sound.brsar" Here's a list of all the audio files within this file http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=990274&postcount=2266 & a list of the tracks "missing" from the normal OST from the game http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=990335&postcount=2272
snd_bgm_Z09_FLUIGI (Luigi's Victory Theme) ^ is this actually a different track (that is, does Luigi actually have a different victory theme?) if not I expect that these are just duplicates.
snd_bgm_Y06_ADV06 (Missing Subspace Emissary music) ^ this (and others in Y and X) are likely sequenced.
Many of the missing streams are probably simply unused and thus were removed from the shipping version. I'm going to take a look out of curiosity, anyway.

Luigi's victory theme in the final version is the same as Mario's, Peach's, and Bowser's.
The only thing backing up the idea that this list indicates that every character had their own unique victory fanfares (as opposed to everyone from the same series sharing one) is that the final version of the game does have a different victory fanfare for Meta Knight than for Kirby & Dedede, despite his coming from the same series. MAYBE that's evidence that the same special treatment was originally planned for every character. There are definately other cases where it would be appropriate; namely Bowser and Ganondorf sharing the same heroic-sounding victory fanfares with Mario and Link.
DAMMIT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNJZXlhHKUE The R/G/B/Y Credits theme is on the disc somewhere & is played in the Wifi Waiting room instead of "X07 - Smash Bros Brawl - WiFi Waiting Room" as well as a different version of the meta knight theme than was on the OST

How do you know he didn't turn his game's music down, leave the SFX up, and lay his own tracks over it?
The first error that it gives is in the info section. It gives gives the number of sound, bank, player, file, and group entries, but then it says "something unknown starting at" and gives an address. Then when it starts extracting sounds, it gives the name of the file to be extracted, but says "I don't get it ******SKIPPING******". It does this for all entries.
On another note, do you mean that this link is dead? Seems OK to me.
The "something unknown" message is normal. Most of the music seems to be sequenced, which is generally why you'll see a SKIPPING message. There are a few streams which it refuses to unpack, though, because they're stereo. I'll take another look at it later today.
is anyone working on a quality rip from brawl? not the stuff thats been floating around...
by Only3Penguins at 2:17 PM EST on February 14, 2008
You haven't been looking hard enough. The full collection of, I believe, 314 brstm files have been available for at least a couple of weeks now. Doesn't get much more quality than that.
brsar_unpack 0.0 also works on the 2 .brsar files from Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles in japan) The files are here if you want to take a look, http://www.mediafire.com/?ayzpmeww3xm ~21MB

@mixup, I've been working on a rip of Brawl everyday ever since the ISO was ripped. It's taking a lot of time because I've been finding all previously released songs elsewhere and comparing the quality to the Brawl release, then choosing the better one (most of the time it's actually the OST version, because of the 44100 vs 30000 sample rate). Also using endings if songs have proper endings rather than just fadeouts. And for the loop fadeouts, I'm doing most of them manually so that the end feels more satisfying. I'm also putting a lot of care into the ID3 tags, and adding an appropriate unique image for each song from the official website. I should be finished in time for the US release, and it will be released via torrent and here: http://www.editorartist.com In a few days I'll release the "missing tracks", the songs that were revealed in the file structure that weren't actually on the disc.
Hi EA, I trust you're using vgmstream to decode the tracks you plan on taking straight from Brawl? I'm sure you'd notice the loop bugs (in in_cube) if you're doing the rip carefully. Or is there another decoder I'm not aware of? Just wanting to know if anyone's using vgmstream...

Hey, EA, as far as I can remember, the theme of Fire Emblem can also be found in Donkey Konga 3. I don't know if it's exactly the same as the one from Brawl, but it does not loop (same for Melee battlefield, which can also be found in european Donkey Konga). I'd also suggest to wait until the US release to get the info for all songs in English.

Questions for anybody who can answer: 1. Examples from Brawl that suffer from the in_cube loop bugs? 2. More detail on the loop bugs and what to look out for? 3. Tips on good places to find lossless Nintendo/Sonic/Metal Gear OSTs (including healthy torrents)? 4. Any preliminary rips of Star Fox Command that I can use? 5. Know of any tools that can read ID3 tags from one MP3 and apply them to another?
I've been using the latest in_cube with 1 for the loop and 0 for the fade. Then I bring in the .wav into my multitrack editor, and use the waveform to find the loop point myself. I'm guessing my process explains why I haven't noticed the bug? But still, there are quite a few tracks I've used in_cube for the fade since I don't possibly have the time to do it manually for every single song. I've downloaded vgmstream, but I'd rather not have to throw away the tagged tracks.
Thanks so much hcs for the warning and absolutely everything you've done, and to agu fungus for the tip on Donkey Konga 3 (though the versions used in Brawl are different I hate to say)!
1) From elsewhere: "I noticed in a few Super Smash Bros Brawl tracks a pop at the loop point. For instance, A09.brstm at 1:30, particularly noticeable in the right channel. Also C09.brstm (1:52) and C05.brstm (1:09), probably many others but I stopped listening after finding those." If you're doing the loop manually there wouldn't be an issue, of course, but otherwise you may well encounter this little pop at the loop point.
I currently have fractional loop counts for the vgmstream test utility, for better control. It occurs to me that a manual setting of playback length might be useful in cases like this where you want full control. Would you find that useful?

by EditorArtist at 4:38 PM EST on February 26, 2008
Yes, a manual setting of playback length would be useful.
More specifically, here's a request (take it or leave it) that could apply to all input plugins on the behalf of editors: an option to define the start point as either 1) the beginning of the stream or 2) the beginning loop point. And the end point as either 1) the end of the stream, 2) the beginning loop point, or 3) the end loop point. This would allow editors to export the song's intro as a WAV and the loop section as a separate WAV.
Yeah, that'd be a nice feature, too. I've written at least one tool that does that (was it for ADX?), won't be hard to add it to the vgmstream test decoder. All these customizations, though, are sort of beyond the functions of an input plugin.

Alright, I did a quick compress of all the Brawl music tracks I've enhanced so far. Most notable are the lost tracks, the ones not included on the game disc (these tracks are marked by a {!} symbol). Love to get feedback before I release this officially. http://www.editorartist.com/game_soundtracks/brawl/Brawl%20WIP.rar
Please don't distribute. You can subscribe to my album release RSS if you want to know when I release the real thing with the remaining songs, ID3 tags, and unique relevant album art from the official website for each specific song: http://www.editorartist.com/rss.xml It should be just in time for the US Brawl release.
For the songs that were on the disc, I didn't do any weird edits to the tracks, just brought in 44.1 kHz versions and spent a lot of time figuring out a quality fadeout. And left the endings intact from the OST, if there is an ending.
They don't have any of the tags or cover art, but thankfully I've found a way to copy ID3 tags from one file to another very easily when the time comes. So just "a few" more tracks to go really, and automating the rest (if they aren't available on an OST and the fade is satisfactory). But lots of other things to take care of besides this unfortunately.
-tell me which songs you desperately need to have two loops (I know some people insist on every song having two loops, but I'm very much on the side of leaving the listener wanting just a little bit more as opposed to being tempted to skip to the next track whenever he/she doesn't love that particular song) -for the ones with endings, if you'd rather have a fadeout instead -the Wario vocal songs: I have the Japanese version seamlessly looping to the English version, tell me if you'd rather just be able to listen to each language separate -The ones with exclamation marks are the bonus tracks that were cut, so the specific versions were selected by me. If you know of any better versions of the song out there, tell me. I also did some audio sweetening and edit tweaks to some of them, so tell me if anything I did is too obvious -the no specific title unknowns: Star Fox Command, Mario & Luigi don't have specific song titles attached in the file structure, tell me if there's a song you like better than what I picked from each respective game -the missing Subspace Emissary music: Y18-Y30 - I took this freedom to choose one song from each series that I felt needed to be in Brawl but isn't. Tell me if any of my choices are meh. -volume - tell me if you notice any of them being too quiet or too loud compared to others
