Super Paper Mario Brstm Question by WrappedInBlack at 5:16 AM EDT on October 12, 2015
So whenever I convert the brstm files from this game, they play at around two times their normal speed. I was wondering if this was an error on my part or if they are actually two times speed in the actual files. I'm asking cause I want to give SPM a custom soundtrack for my next playthrough and I don't want super slow mo songs.

Thanks in Advance

The solution is (or was) to change all the .brstm extensions to .brstmspm (at least that's what used to be done).

If you're doing music hacks, use songs twice as fast at 44100 Hz to replace any original brstms like that. I still haven't played SPM, but my understanding is that some songs play at twice the normal speed until you get an item that slows down time or something, then the game processes the songs at 22050 Hz at that point. Changing the extension to brstmspm when decoding with vgmstream will do the same, and process the songs as 22050 Hz data.

OK, thanks

5 years late, but it's not double speed stereo audio, it's mono audio.

Leo, your assumption is incorrect. The files are most certainly in stereo, and sampled at 22.05KHz, _not_ 44.1KHz (nor are they in mono). In fact, the official Year of Luigi Sound Selection CD (released 2013) contains themes from Super Paper Mario that are upsampled from 30KHz-ish to 44.1KHz Redbook.

Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4.

If Nintendo couldn't even get the original source files pressed onto a CD, why would the game files be any different? It would not make sense for them to put in high quality audio for the game and not the music CD.

I know it seems unbelievable that the audio from the game is at such a low quality (relative to the CD standard), but it is the current reality. Perhaps Nintendo will release an official soundtrack for the game in its original quality. I would not get my hopes up though.
