Soundfont request: Sonic 1-3&K on the Sega Genesis by 20cayers at 5:24 PM EDT on August 19, 2017
Since I heard that the Ultimate Genesis Soundfont wasn't that great for recreating Sonic songs, I did a little research to find a true soundfont for the blue blur, and I stumbled upon THIS: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=27770. I would like to have a soundfont of the the first 3 Genesis games & Knuckles. Since I can't make soundfonts worth a shit, I want to throw this little request out there for anyone who is willing. I would prefer if you also name the instruments, please and thank you. :D

Genesis does not use soundfonts. Please do not try to recreate Genesis songs using a Genesis soundfont, the end result will not be accurate. Use a VST that properly emulates the YM2612 soundchip, such as GENNY.

What Unibunt said. If someone made a Sonic soundfont, it would only have the sampled voices ("come on", for example) since the Mega Drive uses the internal synthesizer for the instruments.

I mean you could theoretically isolate some channels and manually sample the synths to make a soundfont, but it probably would only sound similar, not exactly the same.

Not a soundfont but instruments patches from S3&K to use for a VST called FM8. The VST itself isn't free though.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles FM8 Patch Collection

A free alternative is VOPM where you can plug in these patches from almost all Mega Drive/Genesis games including all of the Sonic games.

OK, the GENNY VST worked... except the drums. It's on the 10th Midi channel, and yet has no sound. Help?

@20cayers
The drums are sampled, so you have to rip them from the game.

The drum samples are notoriously difficult to rip, since they use 4-DPCM compression (unlike the logo jingle, which is uncompressed 8-bit PCM), which is typical of games that use the SMPS sound engine. There are tools to rip and decompress the samples to uncompressed 8-bit PCM, however. But the samples (from my experience) mostly use a weird sample rate that differs depending on the sample, and the third game has so many drum and vocal samples that you might have to play through both 3 and & K to identify each sample.
If you want, I may be able to upload the decompressed samples myself.

Thanks birdmanager6!

A collection of samples from Genesis I had lying around. I believe The Legend of Renegade uploaded this originally. Includes drums from the Sonic games.
