- No Metal Gear Solid in the .psf archive? Lame...

- Has anyone even attempted reverse engineering MGS1's driver and sequence format?
- by Nisto at 4:30 PM EST on February 6, 2016
- I just took a whack at it for a couple of hours.
First off.. I did some digging around and found an extractor and a thread regarding the DAT/DIR files. The contained files may require a bit more work to properly dissect everything. But I think all music is in STAGE.DIR.
Also, I change my mind about the data probably being compressed/encrypted, based on the fact that the model data apparently isn't. Also, TCRF has a dump of debug text which shows where it stores "song data" in memory (801E0000), so I copied the data at that address and searched the disc for it and sure enough, there it is. It looks like the sequence format doesn't have any obvious identifier.
I'm not quite sure about the sample/instrument data though. I dumped all RAM (including SPU RAM) while WARHEAD STORAGE was playing and judging by what PSound found after a scan, it seems at least that song doesn't have any dedicated samples. It seems to use one single bank ("init") for most/all songs, similar to Final Fantasy VII. I could be wrong about all this though.. And I still have no idea what the actual instrument format looks like.
EDIT: 0xFEFF = End of Track
One down...

- I'm just going to say this.
Why are there so many rips of so many games, with literally NO CLUE as to how to actually play them?
For example, there's no actual clue as to how to play xwma files. Why should I have to search on how to play them, and search for plugins? You don't buy a microwave meal, and have to search on Google on how long to heat it up. The instructions are on the packet. So, why are there so many virtually unplayable rips with no clue on how to make them not virtually unplayable?

- because rips aren't microwave meals, they're bulk foods. They (usually) don't come with instructions because it is assumed you wouldn't be obtaining them if you didn't already have a pretty good idea what you were going to do with them.
It's not an ideal way of dealing with the archive, but it is the most practical. Some kind of additional details index or wiki would be nice, but it would require a whole lot of work, especially for a relatively small group of users who might find themselves in trouble if more attention were to be drawn to this site.
As for xmwa files, check this.

- So I downloaded the MegaMan Battle & Chase .psf rip and I can't get the files to play in foobar2000. There's a custom driver I see, but hell knows how to use it.
Guess I'm stuck in the bulk food bin, huh?

- @Master_E
The problem is this set uses an older version of Markgrass's generic psf driver. It needs to be updated, but that's probably gonna take some time. Otherwise, untick "Suppress Opening Silence" and manually skip 1 minute and 10-20 seconds in for music to start playing, or use a different psf plugin/player.

- It's probably gonna break his little heart, but he missed several tracks. (He mentioned in the readme that there were no missing tracks.)
Other than that, thanks for the info!

- I'm sorta surprised that the pc version of beyond good and evil's wad/m/a files are not supported in vgmstream. Were these ever supported in some player, or did I was my time to attempt ripping them?
