- Did you mean either Spectrum 1 or 2, because there doesn't seem to be a patch called Spectrum 3. Also, neither sound like the sound you mentioned (though I mightn't be looking at the right video).
- Those BIN/CUE files... by Xane123 at 2:40 PM EDT on August 31, 2016
- Not to go off topic for long but I myself also downloaded those CDs, the Gigapack ones. They're BIN/CUE, but when I tried installing that version of Daemon Tools, Windows 10 told me it doesn't work with it because "things have changed" or something.
Would I really have to get some older Windows version in a VM and install it there and leave Windows in an evaluation trial just to get the BINs' files extracted?
Other programs I've tried say "unknown format" when trying to open the BIN file or do nothing; What program has worked for these BIN/CUE files of the sample CDs? Sorry to ask this but I figured it's still somewhat relevant and I want to check out those samples myself.

Also, what if the BIN file is not a standard BIN?

- Lots of sampling software supports at least some disk image formats natively. Extreme Sample Converter, CDXtract, Kontakt, etc... You may be better off trying one of those.
And yeah, since what you have is probably a GIGA disk, rather than a basic data disk, you won't see any actual files in a standard file browser or disk image tools.
You can also mount disk images to a virtual drive with a program of your choice, then use a sampling software that supports the disk format, and has the ability to read from drives (e.g. Awave Studio, plus all the aforementioned).

- @Nisto: Will do. I didn't know that BIN/CUE downloads could be this different format that only music-sample programs could read.
EDIT: Okay, Extreme Sample Converter doesn't know what the format of the BIN file is:

I probably should just make my own topic about this to avoid derailing this thread if I run into more problems. It looks different than a normal BIN created by WinISO, too; Compare them!
(full image)
LEFT: Normal BIN.
RIGHT: Sample CD BIN. You said this is the GIGA format; I know it isn't a hex editor but does that look like the format?

- Giga format can be opened in Kontakt or Awave Studio that I know of. Bin/Cue (if it comes with a cue file, you'll need to mount the cue file first) can be virtually loaded with WinCD Emu. It's free as well and is what I use. Once loaded, I use a program called CDXTRACT 4 to extract the contents of my AKAI/Sxx CDs (Awave also works if you select I/O > Read AKAI disc).
- Oddity with WinCD Emu and Awave Studio by Xane123 at 6:29 PM EDT on August 31, 2016
- Ah, good 'ol WinCDEmu!
I installed it and could mount the CUE file as a drive but as soon as Awave Studio tries to read it as an AKAI CD it "ejects" itself, the "device disconnected" sound plays, and it disappears from Windows Explorer.
Is there a way to prevent this? I think I'm so close to getting this to work.

- I have the Kurzweil version of Gigapack as well, and the discs opens fine if I select the .bin files with CDXtract 4.5 (virtual drives -> open disk image).
Do your copies match?
Disc 1 SHA-1: BC2E30CAAD496BB61C38AD33ED98D94A6076B691
Disc 2 SHA-1: 5E1AD91D15C378C73A4CEE5A6BB69186EC405B39

- According to FCIV (Microsoft's hash-checking tool, they both match up exactly:
bc2e30caad496bb61c38ad33ed98d94a6076b691 e-bsgk1.bin
5e1ad91d15c378c73a4cee5a6bb69186ec405b39 e-bsgk2.bin
I guess I should try it out with CDXtract.
By the way, am I derailing this thread too much?
EDIT: It works with CDXtract! Thanks, Nisto! Too bad it has limitations.

- Nice, good to hear it worked out for you! I don't think ESC has Kurzweil support, so that's probably why, unfortunately.
- by Xane123 at 9:29 PM EDT on August 31, 2016
- Ah, ESC didn't but Awave Studio supposedly did but the disc wasn't recognized as one and only treated it as an AKAI sample CD...but once it did, the drive was immediately ejected! (Check this video to see this oddity.)
It turns out CDXtract, although it has a lot of limits, it does allow extracting of the samples, which is all I need anyways, since I make songs in OpenMPT.
