- @marcusss: unfortunately there are times where you either find the same thing on other console releases or worse quality stuff on PS4. For example, Injustce on PS4 uses the same banks from PS3 for music. It’s a combination of MP3 and IMA FSB. Nothing unique here.

- Ahh yes sometimes they are lazy or rather budget driven but it is always disappointing to see when games are released on a new of fairly new machine graphics gets improved but not audio at all. or worse. So far though most music in atrac9 sounds better than the pc (vorbis) releases of games so that is a positive ;)
.. but maybe that is just me and my ears.

- It may sound better because they make it louder? It's not necessarily worse at 128-192kbps.

- I think with atrac9 they use reverb or something as it seems to have a more powerful effect.

- Another thing worth considering is the encoder, it contributes a lot in the final quality I believe.
Seems Xiph's encoder evolved a lot so it's possible different games use older/worse encoders, though I'm not sure how Sony's ATRAC9 encoder could be noticeably better.
For example XMA seems like a good format but in my tests the encoder produced strange artifacts with very simple frequencies.

- When it came to last gen stuff, I often preferred XMA over its AT3p counterpart, for example, MvC3. I felt as though XMA sounded a bit more “clear” and AT3p sounded a bit more “muffled”

- I also thought most games using xma audio sounded sry well.It would be cool to hear how well the xbox one sounds some day when it is cracked.

- so basically i just found out that your usual ATRAC9 file is encoded with 17.5khz cutoff frequencies. how the fuck is the "ATRAC" brand still ongoing is a mystery, because with the way these codecs were programmed to the point of resulting in low-quality audio even at the highest bitrate possible(132kbps in ATRAC3, 352kbps in ATRAC3plus, 504kbps in ATRAC9) you'd think it would have been discontinued much earlier.
as for XMA1/XMA2 the whole thing was based on WMA Pro, which in itself is quite an interesting attempt to deliver a "high fidelity" coded by microsoft to address existing issues with the original WMA codec. although opus is a much better codec than this one, it's not "ATRAC" levels of pure trash.

- If only HE-AAC v1 & 2 were open formats...
HE-AAC has by far the best compression-to-quality ratio, it even sounds great at 24kbps!
At 32kbps, the cutoff is at ~20KHz which is absolutely incredible for such a low bitrate.
I'll post Lossless, HE-AAC, ATRAC, WMA and Opus versions of a track to compare!
