Glad to help. :P I have been biting my tongue for a while. Nonetheless, have at it - you're the boss.

Are you guys seriously moving to torrents :(

The problem there, is I don't torrent :(
by Mouser X at 12:48 AM EDT on August 21, 2008
Perhaps now is a good time to start then? After all, why not? Once you get a torrent client, it's just as easy as downloading off a website. And considering how stable Servage is, torrents are better. Servage frequently cuts people off while they're downloading (or sometimes uploading even) large files. Because of the way torrents work, if you get cut off during the download, no problem. In fact, it's pretty much part of the protocol. The only other thing I can think of against torrents is that, due to the way they're downloaded, you usually have to wait for the entire file to finish downloading before you can use it (whereas if you downloaded it from a website, it's usually downloaded sequentially, and thus you can use the first part of the file, even though the end of the file may be incomplete. But I don't see that as a problem, because it's rare that you weren't intending to download the entire file anyway).

Anyway, what's wrong with torrents? They work fine for me. Mouser X over.

Says the guy who has to pause his torrents whenever someone is on the phone...

Torrents rock.. As long as people seed when they are done its a good system to distribute stuff and less pressure on his bonus section :) I have had that cut off problem a few times.. But we can't complain when we are downloading great stuff :) ^_^

bonus used to be awesome... now its not... is it just me or is something wrong with this situation? and before anyone blames me for it coming down, i'd like to say that in a whole year, i only downloaded 8-12 files. thats roughly one a month.

anyway the point of this post was to state the fact that torrents work on 80% of the population's computers. the other 20% either have firewall or security issues; corrupt files managing their ports; or some other crazy error, stopping them from using torrents.

i do, however, have another suggestion: every archive that hcs has should be listed in a way, similar to the streamDB; then, you can post a "request", similar to the usf request list, except username is included. hcs then reviews this list, and if the user has done enough, hcs (or someone else) could upload the requested set at megaupload (or something of similar workings) in a temporary account. the file would only stay there for a month (without dls). this would save hcs having to go premium or; upload all sets, then when one goes down, reupload.

just trying to help

Thanks for the suggestion wolupgm6. No one's blaming you in particular.

bonus was awesome as long as not too many people knew about it. Bittorrent, while not supported as widely as HTTP, can be awesome all the time, and indeed gets more awesome as it gets more popular.

Regarding the requests system, it is indeed plausible, and I do fill requests from time to time. But to do really make things work (a content management system, a vast collection of auto bittorrent seeds, etc) requires an investment of time that I can't commit myself to spend. I'm working on vgmstream in what spare moments I have, which I think we can agree is a better use of my particular skills.

I think the best solution right now is to do what I've been doing, namely let someone else figure it out. If someone wants to set up a server for streams I can start throwing files at them. If someone has a good plan for how I could set this up that wouldn't require any involvement from me other than possibly funding and a seed data transfer I'd like to see the detailed proposal; either email me or put it in this thread.
Or if someone wants to take it upon himself to fill requests via megaupload more power to you, feel free to use the forum for such stuff (as folks have been doing for years).

But I'm not going to commit myself to babysitting a request list, or put the site at risk of going over bandwidth again.

Again, thanks for your suggestions.

I understand where you are coming from, and, put in your position, I would do the exact same thing. As you probably know, I only post here once a week (Friday night is AUS) because the rest of my time is dedicated to programming and schooling. And I do know that noone is blaming me, I was just saying something before someone did.

Also, may I ask what Wii ISO explorer you used to get the Wii files? Just because I formatted my harddisk (again) the other day and lost various files.

@wolupgm6: Just to clarify, the comments that I made earlier were not blaming you or nenson for the site going offline. I was just pointing out that it looks really bad for someone to be asking for the password over and over when the site went down just a few weeks earlier.

Hcs told me to be quiet about the issue so I will, but I just would like to make sure that there are no hard feelings.

Don't worry about it.

I managed to locate the Wii ISO explorer, but the common-key (key.bin) is hard to find when you cant use torrents. Could someone please nudge me in the right direction?
