Hmm, I have the SM64 sample documented as being track 46 (sample 5) from Datafile 2.. TIB.MONKS could be from "Sonic Images 1 Musical FX, Drums, Percussion". Do you have this library? Well, either way I'm sure it's sampled from hardware (M1 maybe?)

See this post for a list of gear he has by the way.

Yeah I have that library. That's the library. I just had to look at it myself. I don't think its from a M1 as I have it and never came across it. There's also another TIB MONK on that CD. I uploaded it here.

Yeah, probably not. Never really could confirm he had an M1.. That other TIB.MONK sample is pretty cool. Could think of some ways to use it!

I'm rather late and it may be obvious but I'm pretty sure that ETHNSHOUT1 sample was used by Hitoshi Sakimoto in Shippu Mahou Daisakusen/Kingdom Grandprix in the track "Novice Reining" and is probably the sound used many times in the Vagrant Story soundtrack as well. It's also in the Secret of Mana track "The Oracle". Unless somebody else made a sample that's almost identical.

Master E, over a year ago, asked about the samples from the Generation 3 Pokemon titles. I can tell you, -almost- every single instrument there came from the Roland Sound Canvas 88 pro (SC-88p). That super iconic guitar was sampled from a very small register of the Nylon guitar patch and was also used heavily in the Golden Sun series. The drums are almost 100% Sound Canvas (mainly Orchestra and Standard 2 kits iirc for Ruby and Sapphire) though several iconic additions in FireRed/LeafGreen such as the overly compressed snare...thing, the kick drum and the toms, do not appear to be from this synth. Hell, even a few of the SFX (bubble comes to mind) are from here.

FWIW, the SC-88 and all of its variations was insanely popular among Japanese developers and still is. Off the top of my head, Harvest Moon: Wonderful Life, a huge chunk of the Fire Emblem series, Advance Wars 1 + 2, and Hercules no Eikou IV for the SNES all rely heavily on samples from this. Octomania for the Wii also.....poorly

The earlier model, SC-55 (the light version of which is commonly known as the default MIDI sound for Windows machines) is actually integrated in to the Pro version of the synth, meaning a lot of these samples tend to pop up as well (hell, Magical Drop on the SNES was entirely SC-55 samples, and Mario vs Donkey Kong hilariously ripped the Windows version using Modplug Tracker of all things)

tl;dr Roland samples, man.

Hey guys, fantastic topic. One thing I noticed is that many, MANY SNES samples are common across a lot of games. a large portion of these are seemingly Nintendo-exclusive and I've narrowed down the responsibility of their existence down to the guys from the old RND2 (specifically Akito Nakatsuka and Yuichi Ozaki, though I'm sure Kondo had a hand at some point)...I'll compile a set to share later. In addition to the sounds common to many Nintendo-developed titles, there are a few samples that seem to be universal across a LOT of titles, regardless of developer. a specific trumpet (Sim City, Donkey Kong Country), sawtooth (Spanky's Quest, Super Tennis), snare drum (Marvelous, Wario's Woods, every single BSX title) and organ (Mario Kart, Kouryuu no Mimi, Earthbound) come to mind.

My guess is that Nintendo had a basic sample pack they gave out to developers at the time. Now, if we can narrow down the source of these, it's possible we can find many other Nintendo game samples from that time period as well. Again, I will take the liberty of compiling my findings and post them here for people to take a stab at.

I've always been fond of a particular guitar sample used in at least Super Tetris 3 (Sparkliss) and Ruin Arm (Battle with Emperor), probably others. Gonna assume it's a TOSE thing.

So it was all SC-88 Pro, huh?

Go figure. Thanks for helping a guy out!

I'm guessing that most F-Zero X instruments come from Roland modules too?

The Roland SC-88 also has most of the instruments used in Golden Sun and its sequel. It's just small registers.

I'm so happy I got the SC-88 though. I'm having so much fun with it. So far here's a list of games that I've discovered use samples from this canvas.

All GBA GameFreak games
All GBA Camelot games
Summonknight 1 and 2
Mother 3
Kirby Air Ride
Smash Melee (Shogo Sakai loves this Sound Canvas)
Wind Waker
