- The Final Fantasy XIII [MP3] is disappointing. What's the bit rate, 160 kbps, Little-Big-Planet-style? CD-quality sample rate?
One less download.
Katamari Forever is my only hope for high-quality, streamed audio.

- I'm not upset about it or anything if it came off that way. I meant the tone to be quizzical, like "really?". It was just that reading people on GameFAQs' answers board, there were a couple who said their audio systems were receiving 7.1 linear PCM, even pointing out it was real surround, not Pro Logic or anything. And the back of the game says Dolby Digital (not Pro Logic II like I know Nintendo games do) and DTS, so I figured that meant it had all the music in multi-channel AC3, whatever the DTS format is, and PCM, like audio tracks on a DVD.
And I guess the expectation of Blu-ray, you know, ultra hi-fi picture and audio, next generation. I suppose since the FMVs take up so much space, they wouldn't have had room for uncompressed surround sound music. Interesting that everyone was fooled about the sound they were hearing though. I guess if your equipment tells you it's one thing you're probably inclined to not question it.
I haven't heard the Xbox 360 audio yet since I'm evidently incompetent at doing what Google search results tell me to do, but the MP3 does sound good on the trial version. I've heard some say Sound Forge is reputed to have the best MP3 encoder of all, and it is Sony's program. Can't say I would have thought it was CBR 160 kbps. "Battle Results" and "Those For the Purge" are mixed differently too, possibly others, so it's cool to have that and I'm hoping there will be similar small surprises in the real game soundtrack. Maybe just some slight variation made somewhere for the English version that wasn't put on the OST Plus that will make me happy to have in my possession.
Like I said, thanks regardless of what my expectation was, bxaimc. I'll be downloading it when you put it up. And everyone, please excuse my rant. :)

- To be honest, there was just one of ~20 games that uses pcm, the rest is atrac3, ps adpcm, mp3 or ogg...
Could be that the sound card recieves 7.1 linear PCM, but this is just a fake output (see FF13, the full version has just 128kbps from what i heard)

- Most output is going to be linear PCM, since that's what the software or hardware is going to be mixing. There's no point in decoding, mixing, and then recoding to ADPCM or whatever just for the sake of conserving bandwidth over the cable to the amplifier.

- Right, I understand that now. Recorded media has everything predetermined, so there is no further mixing. Games being interactive means that music and voices and sound effects have to be kept separate and then combined into one stream when called upon, so it's not the same as a movie and I didn't make that connection before. I just saw the same logos as on the backs of movie cases and assumed the same without thinking more about it.
I wish they had made the music real multi-channel, but actually I think that in practice is often overrated. Not bad, potentially way better than stereo, but I think people like it moreso because it's different and it feels like something premium, rather than the actual application. I've found when watching something that features music prominently like The Beatles Anthology, even though there's Dolby and DTS 5.1 and that's cool to hear and have, I kind of prefer the 2 channel PCM track through Pro Logic II. (Although the surround "Strawberry Fields Forever" has a guitar part that, when you're positioned right between the two rear speakers, sounds like it's literally *inside* your head.)
I guess it's because lots of times when doing surround, people mix the main thing to the front and largely put effects and stuff in the rear. I wish they'd use every channel to its full capacity, and matrix decoding gives a (really good) simulation of that. Hey, it was enough to trick everyone into thinking they were getting a true 7.1 mix. But I guess they all assumed like me, if it says linear PCM on your receiver's display or whatever that it just is and it'd be the same as with a movie's audio, not thinking how games would work differently.
EDIT: Wow, enough of my walls of text.
