I played the timpani at a higher pitch in MODPlug and it sounds more like a Roland timpani than a Peter Siedlaczek timpani.

It may perhaps be as there is both a Roland SC-88 timpani and a Peter Siedlaczek timpani in that game. I know the trainer battle used a Peter Siedlaczek timpani and they both come from the same sound bank.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the timpani used in BiS's final boss theme because the other person mentioned it. Sorry about that.

@punk7890-2 About that last sentence, a clarification, I meant the string ensemble was used in Bowser's Inside Story (but I forget which song). And yes, I'm fully aware that some of the instruments are wrong but I wasn't talking about Pokemon. Sorry if that wasn't fully clear.
Also, for the sake of knowing, in which song exactly did you hear the crystal FX?

@Benjamin So you're assured that the timpani in that final boss theme is from Roland?

No worries about the confusion.

In this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB2_5ElV1IE I heard the Crystal FX. On closer inspection, it plays a Round Glock or Loud Glock as well.

I saw today this forum has people that are really good at finding samples and where they came from, so I signed up to ask about this mysterious sample;

Basically, this sample appears in multiple games from Japan; From videos on YouTube, the Hamster Paradise series including Hamsterz Life and a Shugo Chara DS game.

It sounds like the Roland Sound Canvas Fantasia's higher sample in the version that comes with Windows but with an unknown pad behind it, but multiple separate games have it so it must be a common sample.

I have a folder of the Hamsterz Life and Shugo Chara samples here. Where is this pretty nice sample from?

That is the fantasia sample from a SC-88. Only difference is in those samples is that it has awful static in it. The fantasia sample is a pad / instrument in one already on a SC-88.

Oh, so it is a Roland sample and it's from the best-sounding one! I guess it really is popular with composers over there!

Unfortunately, it's the one there's apparently no soundfont of from what I read earlier in this thread, meaning it can't be used to play MIDIs with that cool sample in its full quality and I'm unfamiliar with these, so what is the SC-88? A keyboard or one of those boxes I saw in a video?

...not to go off topic.

Edit: People sometimes ask questions like this but maybe someone could upload that fantasia in high quality or something for a sample; I currently have the Shugo Chara versio of it in my soundfont but the original SC-88 one has to sound even better with no DS compression if there is any.

I never did manage to find that sample on some of my Roland Sxx CD's which would be in the highest quality since these CD's are the original sounds that Roland has made. Some SC-88 samples are on there as well. I've only managed to find a small handful however. Here is a sample of that fantasia, however. It's just one long sample. No looping or anything else and only one instrument split like in that sample you linked.

A SC-88 (Sound Canvas) is just a box with a ton of sounds in it that you hook up to your computer, essentially. This is what it looks like.

Also to note, there is a emulator available that has all sounds from a SC-88/88Pro/8820 on it.

Ah, that's the sample! Strangely, Shugo Chara's sample, when compared, hs the initial "ding" dragged out longer than yours...did they record theirs from the SC-88 itself or somehow get the "raw sample" or can the length of the initial "ding" be dragged out like the Shugo Chara's sample does using the buttons on the front of the SC-88?

Ah, I know I cuold've looked it up myself but eh, I was worried if I ever wanted the true Sound Canvas experience someday (and not Microsoft's bad by comparison samples) I'd have to own a second keyboard or something (I own a Yamaha PSR-E413), but it's a box!

I know it's just something personal, but after hearing that sample pop up in multiple games, I've considered it a special sample that'd be special to hear, though Microsoft's built-in SC samples sounded so bad that I thought Sound Canvases couldn't sound good...but then I heard that strange sample popping up in multiple games, not knowing it came from a better Sound Canvas.

tl;dr: Thanks for telling me what the "Airy Fantasia" as I called it due to its different sound than what I was used to at the time came from!
