@palo_alto

i am totally sure that those pads in the intro (00:00 to 00:05) are from Sound Canvas (SC-8820 MAP) it may be a regular glockenspiel or the Round Glock.

thanks, but I meant the main pad and string sound heard throughout the piece (especially the 'cold', 'icy' sounding pad), not the bells at the beginning
by Enclave123 at 2:03 PM EST on December 2, 2017
@Palo_alto it could be in any Roland Rompler.
by G-Boy at 2:55 PM EST on December 2, 2017
@palo_alto
It's probably from Spectrasonics Distorted Reality 1 or 2.

Thanks!
FFVIII etc. by notveryhelpful at 12:23 AM EST on December 4, 2017
According to Uematsu, FFVIII is mostly Roland SC-88, except for some live instruments like the xylophone in "Blue Fields". There's an abandoned FFVIII soundfont at https://ff8sf2.zophar.net/ which has most General MIDI presets, and quite a lot of instruments tweaked for each FFVIII track.

FFX may also have SC-88 instruments - for example, the harpsichord in "Game Over" is similar to the ones in FFVIII, like the "Truth Harpsichord" in the soundfont, but with louder bass frequencies.

@palo_alto

I tried to rip the MIDI and soundfont with a PSF2 set and VGMTrans (https://ci.appveyor.com/project/magcius/vgmtrans/), and apparently the pads in "Phantoms" are a combination of a few different sound layers.

There are two types of synth strings, and two different "windy" sounds. One windy sound begins with a "hit" and decays quickly, while the other has a more constant volume (this is the breathy one). One is panned towards the left channel, and the other one towards the right. There's also a sustained piano sound that plays at the same time as the synth strings and windy sounds from 0:08 to 0:41. The pad after this is the two synth string sounds mixed with the two windy sounds.

"This Is Your Story" may include the same synth strings and wind effects more prominently, but it's streamed unlike most of the soundtrack, and therefore the samples can't be separately ripped. The PS3 arrangement is quite different for both themes, but the mixing and some of the instrumentation are clearer in the newer version of "Phantoms". The same windy samples probably aren't used in the older and newer versions.

The instruments in the "Phantoms" sound something like this (the 0x... track titles come from VGMTrans):

0x31 - Synth strings A (0:41-1:14 etc)
0x15D - Synth strings A (0:41-1:14 etc)
0x7D9 - Synth strings B (0:41-1:14 etc)
0xE5B - Synth strings B (0:08-0:41 etc)
0x159E - Piano (0:08-0:41 etc; layered with 0xE5B)
0x1CE1 - Glockenspiel (0:00-0:41 etc; layered with the other glockenspiel tracks)
0x22B8 - Glockenspiel (0:00-0:41 etc; layered with the other glockenspiel tracks)
0x2FE6 - Glockenspiel (0:00-0:41 etc; layered with the other glockenspiel tracks)
0x30D2 - Shaker & jingle bell (always played)
044B85 - Percussion (0:41-1:14 etc)
0x5042 - Triangle (always played from 0:08 onward)
0x5D4D - Wind A (0:08 onward; layered with the other wind sound)
0x5DE7 - Wind B (0:08 onward; layered with the other wind sound)

Roland synth string example that is quite similar (?): http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20SC-

@notveryhelpful

contrary to your username, that was very helpful indeed! I suspected there was a piano type attack layered with that 'icy' pad in the A section, great to have it confirmed

that SC-880 patch is very similar to the strings heard in the B section, which also suggests that it might originate from the JV/XP series. thanks for your hard work!
