Struggling with MinGW.

Ah, my PATH variable was conflicting with a separate install of GNU Fortran.

Argh, you know when you have been programming too much, when in a lecture, you start semi-coloning the end of your lines on the page. -.-

The last few days I've been spending every spare moment on LZH8, a relatively new compression that's started appearing in Wii Virtual Console games.

On Sunday night/Monday morning I disassembled the binary from such wad, documented the format, and produced a decompressor.

On Monday and Tuesday nights and Wednesday morning I wrote a compressor that almost perfectly recompresses files (there is some slight difference the beginning but the bulk of the bitstream is identical). This works for compressing patched ROMs for injection into the VC.

This morning I implemented some hashing for much faster compression. I also made a non-strict version of the compressor, which uses the same output format but goes beyond the arbitrary limits in existing compressed files for slightly better compression (a 2MB ROM compresses 4k smaller), the smaller files also work in the VC.

I'm still frustrated about the ordering of the tables, though my method is fine and the files I produce are exactly the same size and bit-for-bit identical past the first 1k or so, I was really hoping to be able to exactly reproduce the files. Being able to one-up Nintendo's compression is a small consolation.

While HCS is going around and doing totally awesome and useful things, I, on the other hand, just spent 10 hours straight (yes, non-stop, for anything...) playing the NDS game, Nostalgia. Sadly, most of that time was spent level grinding, though, not intentionally. I recently got an upgrade to my airship, which allowed me to travel to any point on the "globe" (North still wraps around to the South) I wanted to, so I spent a significant portion of my time traveling to these new areas, and filling out the map. The most time-consuming problem is that the random battles happen far too often. In that last ten hours, probably 2, maybe 3, hours of it actually progressed the story. :/

But hey, at least it's a fun game, even if the battles get a bit tedious after awhile (especially when you're a much higher level than the game expects you to be at, at the point I'm currently at). Mouser X over and out.

1. Still waiting on information regarding famicompo6 :(
2. Thinking of playing RE2 on the old N64 on trick or treat's day. Been a while already, so it'll be like playing the game for the first time all over again :)
3. Schoool. I?m partly flooded with school work.
4. Some more schooool.
