Just got IDSoftware's ETQW and it was by far the best $20 I have ever spent. I would suggest you all grab a copy. It's RRP is $39.99 however the special edition comes with a bonus disk and is half price! Get to it!

IBM Lotus Notes 7 has, among other things, a nearly useless undo system. Typically there is exactly one level of undo. Sometimes, though, there is none, like when removing a row or column from a table.
Oh, but they realized this, it was an intentional design decision, so rather than remove it as soon as you click the button, a dialog box pops up saying:
"This operation cannot be undone. Do you wish to proceed?"
with Yes/No buttons.
What operation? If I hit the "delete row" button by mistake, which is about all this kind of dialog is good for, when I really meant the "delete column" button, I will get the exact same dialog. Yes, I had intended to do some operation, but which?
Also, this is a modal dialog. It steals focus from the main window, so the blinking cursor which would tell you which row or column you have chosen to delete is hidden, and you can't get it back without dismissing the dialog.

-----

Consider two icons:
- An empty file folder hanging open at 45 degrees, with an arrow indicating an opening motion.
- A blank sheet of paper, upper left corner dog-eared, with a pencil pointing near the bottom.

What do these mean? The folder looks pretty obviously like it is opening, I would guess that this would open an existing document. And the blank sheet of paper with a pencil... seems like that would make a new document and start editing it. I'm wrong (every time, I have to summon up the tooltips). The folder is "new", and the pencil and paper is "edit".

-----

Say I need to look at two documents at once. I've got two monitors for just this purpose, and Notes has the feature to break a document out its main window into its own window (Open In New Window), which I can drag over to the other monitor. All's well, this works OK, though the phrasing of the command doesn't tell you that it removes the tab from the other window.
So I Alt-Tab between the windows, merrily scrolling each along as I compare them. I begin to get confused, however, as it becomes apparent that I don't actually have any visual indication of which is the active window. Somehow Alt-Tabbing between these two Notes windows leaves the title bars of both in the active state. When viewing a document no cursor is displayed (unless a link is highlighted), so there is no indication of which window has focus.

-----

There's lots more where that came from, these are just the ones I encountered in the space of a few minutes which spurred me to write this up. Maybe these are fixed in Notes 8, which we are being required to update to in a week, but I double doubt it.

Notes 8 addresses all of these issues, yay.
Table operations can be undone, the edit icon is gone and the new icon looks like a page with a little plus sign in the upper left, and alt-tab works normally.
Plus! selection works like every other application on earth (rather than sometimes involving highlighting, sometimes involving little check marks).
Still wouldn't wish it on anyone, though.
